South Dakota State is in its second season of transistion from NCAA Division II to Division I, and is not affliated with a conference. Last season, the Jackrabbits posted a 21-7 record, a tally that included victories over Kentucky (57-55) and Alabama (86-83). Junior guard Megan Vogel returns as South Dakota State's leading scorer, averaging 15 points and 5.8 rebounds last season.

Vogel was the third leading scorer among the NCAA Division I Independents. Vogel also finished third among the Independents, connecting on 40.2 percent of her three-point field goal attempts.

The Jackrabbits won both of their exhibition games this season, posting a 127-76 victory over Minnesota-Crookston and an 84-30 victory over Upper Iowa, both NCAA Division II institutions. Senior center Christina Gilbert scored 24 points in the Minnesota-Crookston victory, as six Jackrabbits tallied double-figures in the scoring column. In the win over the Peacocks, sophomore Sarah Meckley tallied a game-high 18 points. South Dakota State opens the 2005-06 season Saturday at Nebraska.

The Jackrabbits are guided by sixth-year head coach Aaron Johnston. A 1996 graduate of Gustavus Adophus, Johnston began his coaching career as a graduate assistant on the South Dakota State men's basketball team. Johnston also served as an asistant for former South Dakota State coach Nancy Neiber before being named the head coach in 2000. He owns a career record of 126-40 and guided the Jackrabbits to three consecutive NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearanecs, including a National Championship in 2003, the school's first.

INSIDE THE SOUTH DAKOTA STATE SERIES: Sunday's contest is the first ever between the two teams. In 2002, the Bulldogs hosted the Jackrabbits, a then NCAA Division II school, in an exhibition contest, winning 77-66.
