FORT PIERRE — When Sam Ostarello knows what she wants, she does not waste any time in taking it.
Ostarello, a 6-foot-2 junior at Stanley County High School, has accepted a full scholarship to play basketball at Purdue University. She is the fourth local basketball player to accept a Division I scholarship in the past two years ... (more).
Making the early commitment to play Big Ten basketball was not as easy as it sounds. Ostarello was also heavily recruited by South Dakota State University of Brookings, who gave her a scholarship offer midway through this past basketball season.

Seems to happen fairly often in football , but I can't recall it happening in basketball.

Agree. Not saying it won't or can't happen, but it just seems odd that one poster is basically saying she is backing out of her verbal.

A whole lot of cards being stacked on top of an unsourced rumor right now . . .

I thought there was a board rule that we could not spread a rumor about an current or potential athlete unless it was from a documented source?

I don't think Ostrello ever verballed to the Jacks. I don't think she broke any such agreement. She was a Jacks fan and seriously considered SDSU, according to news accounts at the time, and then her coach started sending tapes of her to major colleges and Ostrello (and her parents) got interested in Purdue. She shouldn't be accused of breaking a verbal commitment. There's no evidence of that. There's a big difference between being interested in a school and giving a verbal commitment, which might not be legally binding but is a morale agreement.

That's how I remember it as well. So I still can't recall a basketball recruit backing out of a verbal.

Does it matter now? I agree it seldom happens, but that is not to say it does not happen or can not happen. If you took the lady to court what would you have to support your suit? Only an oral agreement, which is open to dispute. It would be the SA word against the coaches word. Coaches are not as noble as AJ. In fact he would most likely understand and accept their changed choice.

I think this is the risk that coaches take when offering a verbal and the SA accepts, but nothing stands in their way in changing their mind. I expected both White and Fiegen to do so as they were part of the Dakota Schoolers and they would get greater exposure such as that in the NIKE AAU in Las Vegas and other tournaments. I thought Nagy was taking a big chance that the Madison guys would later follow through with a LOI which is binding, but since you are dealing with someone's future, the schools often release SA from their LOI and dont enforce it like a business contract such as MSU coming to Fargo. If the young lady from Pierre changes her mind, its not a problem as far as I am concerned. Sam Ostrello, would have been a big part of the Women's BB at SDSU, but she thought otherwise and thats her preogative. Schmidt happens.

As I recall, Ostarello was being recruited heavy by SDSU and Purdue, and was undecided between the two until very late when she went with the Boilermakers.

That's how I remember it as well. So I still can't recall a basketball recruit backing out of a verbal.

Not 100% you probably are right. I just assumed she did. Sure felt like she backed out of one.

As I recall, Ostarello was being recruited heavy by SDSU and Purdue, and was undecided between the two until very late when she went with the Boilermakers.

Just what I heard from someone close to the source. So far it is just a rumor and will be until she signs or doesn't sign.

By mutual agreement?Is it one sided or not?She get another offer after her verbal was given?See the questions that arise when a "rumor" is circulated?Not good.

You sure she verballed? I'm not sure, but I think she had a pretty good relationship with AJ and had been a Jacks fans since she was little, but had not verballed. From what I remember it was tough for her to tell AJ she was going to Purdue instead of SDSU.

So your saying a young lady whose dad played sports at SDSU and whose brother has signed a NLI is going to back out of her verbal? I don't remember a verbal committment from this area backing out ever. The only ones I can remember are football recruits.
