Re: Back to the Runnin' Rabbits?

Watch Drake play this week in the tournament. I think that's the kind of offense Nagy is looking at running. Right, or I'm I misunderstanding?

Reading description of Drake's win in the Mo Valley Championship game sounded like a 6-7 man edition of the Jacks WBB 10 person rotation. It's working for AJ, I'd like to see Nagy's team be the second coming of the Jim Marking teams of the late 60's/70's. I remember a UND/SDSU track meet of a basketball game in the Barn. Man, that kind of basketball would be great to see again.

The change in offense can only be good for the program especially if it give our guys the opportunity to show their talent better. I think because of size often we had faced a number of mismatches. After the Minnesota game, our opponents seemed to have shut down Callahan completly. That is one problem that needs fixing IMHO. Its very difficult to get a good shot when there is a 6"7' or better hand in your face.

I missed both the Villonova and Drake games, so still have no idea what this new offense will look like. I know we seem to have coaching minded people on this board. I sure would appreciate any kind of an explanation.

I suspect too, that its going to take a while to get the execution of this offense down pat, and I anticipate some fan anxiety next year.

It's interesting that you mentioned the Jim Marking era. I have no opinion on the projected change in the Jacks offense (I live too far away to see the games now) for next year but I do agree with Rabid that the Marking era was some entertaining basketball.

I like the potential of the new offense, too. I also see value in having big guys like Engren step out and pop a 3 once in awhile. Mostly likely, a big guy who can shoot (like Engren) would pull a big defender away from the basket with him. This more open type of offense seems to play right into the hands of quick guys like Palarka, Moss, Casey and Williams.

I do think Mac will be our starting point next year, with Garrett, Clint, and Kai as the other guards/forwards. Mac is a good outside shooter and that gives us 4 starters with outside range.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

I agree Mac will be our starting point guard. I think outside of Kai we are in big trouble from a size standpoint if the balance of your proposed starting lineup holds up. Clint in particular needs to really improve from his freshman year. He did not provide a lot of production in relation to the minutes he received down the stretch.

Here is my weak attempt at a depth chart for next season, I agree we will be lacking for depth at the 4 and 5 positions, but do have a few guys in the 6'5"-6'7" range who can shoot. We might be a decent rebounding and scoring team, interior defense could be a problem. Maybe we pull a Drake and go full court pressure with a zone base defense?

I'm curious about Mackenzie, he seems to be getting alot of chatter on here. I confess i don't know much about him. I've watched him a few times in practice and i checked his stats from his junior year... nothing exciting there. Anyone care to enlighten me?

I do know Nagy said in one of his postgame interviews, Mackenzie was the #1 point guard on his team this year (even though he had been redshirted). But Nagy also cautioned this observation was made by just the way he was practicing.

I think his ability to distribute and not turn the ball over will be his main contributions. To say we suffered from turnovers this year would be putting it mildly. Having a 5th year senior who can keep turnovers down is going to a huge benefit if he can bring that to the table. He could average 5 points a game, but if his impact keeps the team turnovers at around 15 a game, he will account for an increase in team scoring.

He may also help on the defensive end. I don't remember him standing out defensively when I watched him in years past, but he is a natural point guard with quick feet. Most of the time last year, we had a 2 guard defending the other team's point.

I don't know if anyone watched the Wisconsin v. Cal St Fullerton first round matchup in the NCAA tourney, but Fullerton's biggest player was 6'6". The Badgers were significantly bigger with their 2 (Krabbenhoft) playing at 6'7", not to mention Landry at 6'8, Butch at 7'2" and Steimsma at 7'1". However, Fullerton was in the game until the very end when the just ran out of gas. They had one of their guards go off in the game or it may have been a blowout, but there are teams out there who have had success without much height. A couple seasons ago, George Washington made the Elite 8 (if memory serves me) with their tallest player a wide-bodied 6'7". The key with smaller lineups is having outstanding guard play. We need that to happen if we're going to win at this level.

Another interesting tidbit on Fullerton - every one of their players were transfers from either a Juco or another school.

The Juco system in Cali...huge....IMO going Juco can provide immediate help...but, I'm not sure if we want to sell our soul....While some go to the Juco system because they feel they were overlooked (Josh Huepel)....many of the players are there for academic reasons or worse....my friends it's very thin ice....so if the staff goes that route...walk carefully...because the Juco route has a buyer beware sticker attached. And as with regular recruiting....the pecking order is still in full effect.

I'm generally against going the Juco route, myself. I think it presents a slippery slope. If you become known as a Juco school, you significantly limit your ability to recruit 4 year players.

JUCO's are good for a quick fix to fill a certain need. However, I doubt few if any programs can sustain long term success by using primarily JUCO players.
