It's the time of the season when most coaches narrow the rotation. It appears that the Jacks will mainly have an 8 man rotation with Wallace, Flatten and Theisen being the first three off the bench. Pretty much the same as with the previous staff.

Well, I guess you could've said the same thing about Orris, right? Now he is starting. My take is the coaches are playing the players that they think give them the best chance to win, period. Telly is playing more minutes than anyone in the country and Severyn is his backup. That doesn't mean a lot of minutes. He is capable of playing more than one position but that is where he is best. That is one take. The other would be that he isn't doing something that fits into the system. Does he struggle in zone? I have no idea.

I'm like the rest of you and love to see the local kids play but for some reasons he isn't getting minutes. We need to have faith in the coaches. They have certainly shown a willingness to change things around. They pulled El Darwich's red shirt, they were starting Gentry while now he isn't getting minutes, and they have moved Orris from the end of the bench into the starting role. They are definitely mixing it up. It is up to each player to earn those minutes. That shouldn't be any different under Nagy, Otzelberger, Calipari, or any coach.

He's a nice kid and I hope he earns more minutes.

Tyler said on the radio during the USD game that Telly has played more minutes than anyone in the country. We need him out there. He is one of the better defenders. You see him take a lot of charges plus he is long. He can score from numerous places offensively. So, it isn't a surprise his minutes are high but it also isn't a surprise hearing just how high they are that his stats from 3PT are down.

    Looks that way.

Link to free audio of the Coaches show. TJ talks about the zone (as others have mentioned in this thread).

Just look at his attempts per game, and you'll find your answer. He was taking 4 attempts/game as freshman, 5 as a sophomore, and up to 7 this year. He could be selective before, now has to force. Combine that with almost no threat of penetration by our guards and he has less space.

He's shooting 36% on nearly 7 attempts a game? That's not amazing, but that's definitely reliable enough to be considered efficient, especially for as many attempts as he's taking.

Our problem is that we just can't space the floor well enough to get good looks. You'd think with Daum getting doubled that wouldn't be an issue, but it is. We have too many guys who aren't threats to shoot, or really do anything on offense. Orris can't shoot. Flatten hasn't done anything to scare teams. King is limited. Same with El Darwich. Think of our great teams. Every person was a threat on offense, and it kept teams honest. We have at best 3-4 threats (generously) on the floor at a time, which leaves someone that teams can leave open.

Hess shooting 36% on 7 attempts a game is fine.

Another thing he mentioned is the zone allows them to use guys they want to better that they wouldn't be able to in man to man due to matchup issues. Specifically mentioned Hess and a couple of others

What bigticket said. That and we are shooting a much higher percentage on offense when we play zone and other teams are shooting a lower percentage. Also brought up by Tyler is despite of the panic about the amount of threes made per game against the zone we are giving up a massive two extra threes per game. Also mentioned one of the main reasons is also that we need as much energy available for Daum on the offensive end so part of it is to avoid him getting pounded on in the post with other teams trying to get him into foul trouble as well as keeping him out of foul trouble. He also said that playing zone isn't what he wants to do necessarily but it's what is the best way for this group of guys to win, and it's not about his ego and forcing man to man because that's what he's been around primarily in his coaching career.

The pounding by the defense on Daum may have more weight in that argument. He takes a fair amount of abuse while playing offense. He fouled out against Wyoming in 35 minutes and Idaho in 31 minutes with OT. The first game against Cal he had 4 fouls playing against the 7 footers. The zone is not the biggest negative. The execution of the zone could have used a lot more polish earlier. The 1-3-1 was not the primary set against the yotes and that may have helped. It is no surprise that the offense runs through Mike Daum. The Jackrabbits need another contributor(s) to fit into the offense. It is too early to give up on the players expected to step up.
