Top-seeded Valparaiso (15-12, 11-5 Mid-Con), which won 10 of its last 12 conference games after a 1-3 start in league play, will meet No. 8 seed Oakland (13-16, 6-10 Mid-Con) in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Valpo won both meetings between the two teams in the regular season.
Second-seeded IUPUI (19-10, 10-6 Mid-Con), the defending Mid-Con Tournament champion, has won at least one game in each of the three league tourneys in which it’s competed, including back-to-back championship game appearances the last two years. The Jaguars will meet No. 7 seed Southern Utah (10-17, 6-10 Mid-Con) in the first round. The two teams split their series during the regular season, with each winning on the other’s home court.
In its first year in the Mid-Con, No. 3 seed Centenary (16-11, 10-6) finished one game out of first place in the league standings and beat each of its Mid-Con foes at least once in its inaugural Mid-Con campaign. The Gents will meet sixth-seeded Chicago State (11-19, 9-7 Mid-Con) in the first round of the tourney. The Cougars tie their best seed ever for the Mid-Con Tournament and set a school record for league wins this season.
Fourth-seeded Oral Roberts (17-10, 10-6 Mid-Con) will meet No. 5 seed UMKC (14-13, 9-7 Mid-Con) in the remaining quarterfinal in a rematch of last season’s first-round match-up. Oral Roberts started the league slate by winning its first five games, while UMKC beat each Mid-Con team at least once while finishing over .500 in conference play for the first time in three years. The two teams won on the other’s home court during the regular season.
Western Illinois (3-25, 1-15 Mid-Con) did not qualify for the eight-team Mid-Con Tournament.
The Valparaiso-Oakland match-up will kick off the tournament on Sunday, March 7, at noon; that game will be followed by the Oral Roberts-UMKC contest at 2:30 p.m. The third quarterfinal will pit IUPUI and Southern Utah at 6 p.m., while the evening will close with Centenary and Chicago State hooking up at 8:30 p.m.
The winners of the first two games will meet in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 8, while the winners of the final two quarterfinal games will meet at 8:30 p.m.; both semifinal games will be televised on selected Fox Sports Net regional affiliates. The championship game is slated for a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday, March 9, and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
