Nov. 11, 2004
Junior Bruce Horan hit seven of eight three-point field goal attempts and scored a game-high 21 points to lead a hot-shooting Butler team to an 89-72 victory over St. Joseph's in a men's basketball exhibition game at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Thursday, Nov. 11. The game was Butler's final preseason test before the 2004-05 season-opener at home against South Dakota State on Nov. 19.
Horan hit the first two shots of the game from beyond the three-point arc and helped Butler jump to a 14-0 lead against the NCAA Division II Pumas. He finished the first half with 12 points, hitting four of four shots from three-point range, and helped the Bulldogs stretch their margin to 17 points, 41-24, at halftime. Butler shot 74% from the field in the first 20 minutes, and hit seven of nine three-point attempts!
"We have good sets and if we run our plays right, we get good shots," Horan said after the game.
The Bulldogs opened a 23-point lead early in the second half on a three-point field goal by freshman A. J. Graves, who replaced junior Avery Sheets in the Bulldogs? starting lineup. Sheets was sidelined, following an emergency appendectomy on Nov. 4.
St. Joseph's did make a run at the Bulldogs in the second half, behind a fullcourt, pressing defense. The Pumas used a 13-2 run to cut Butler's lead to 10 points, 64-54, with just over ten minutes remaining in the contest. But the Bulldogs answered with a 17-7 scoring run to push the lead back to 20 points, 81-61.
The Bulldogs, who wound up hitting 14 of 18 three-point field goal attempts and shooting 64% for the game, had five players score in double figures. Graves scored 16 points in the second half and finished with 19, while sophomore Nick Brooks tallied 12. Sophomore center Jamie Smalligan and junior Brandon Polk each added 11. Smalligan led the Bulldogs on the boards with six rebounds, helping Butler to a 32-24 rebounding advantage.
"That was a good test for us. (St. Joseph's) played with a lot of energy, they have good athletes and they're disciplined," said Butler coach Todd Lickliter. "(The game) did expose some things for us. We turned the ball over too much in the first half." . . .
Go Jackrabbits, beat the Bulldogs! ;D
