I read an article from the Fort Collins Coloradoan discussing the NCAA Basketball Tournament and Revenue brought in by the Mountain West Conference by having Utah and New Mexico.
I will admit it was a little confusing to me, but I will post the link and maybe someone can use the article to explain the formula the NCAA uses for its revenue sharing for conferences and there institutions.
Anyway it is a nice chuck of change that will hopefully be invested into South Dakota State University in the near future with conference affiliation.
Thus far, the MWC - thanks to New Mexico earning a berth and Utah winning its first two games - has earned four units worth $164,000 apiece. Now, payouts for the 2005 tournament don't begin until next year, but the Lobos and Utes have combined to earn $656,000 (minus one-time stipends for participating teams) to be divided by the league's members.
But here's where things get good. The NCAA payout formula is stretched over six-year periods, which means that, starting next year, the MWC will get $656,000 each year through 2011 - a staggering $3.936 million - from this year's Big Dance.
Better yet, the total earned each year is the combined total earned during the preceding six-year period. This year, for example, the league gets to share 15 units earned since the MWC was born in 1999-2000 - approximately $2.28 million. Next year, the MWC check will be for 19 units - approximately $3.116 million.
Exact totals aren't in yet, but between the BCS and NCAA payouts, Colorado State University figures to get somewhere around $1.25 million in the coming months.
