  • Nagy's Salary

The StarTribune did a nice story on the the label - midmajor in referencing VCU's and Butler's performance in the Big Dance. Myron Medcalf even referenced that the smaller schools can't pay their coaches the same nor recruit the same athletes, but can still have major success.

After reading the story, it really made me ponder what an incredible value we get for Nagy's $100,000+ salary. While the prominant midmajors can't reimburse their coaches like the big conferences, they are still paying significantly more than what SDSU pays Nagy.

Apparantly, VCU's Shaka Smart gets paid $325,000 in base salary. While Butler does not have the same reporting process as public schools, Brad Stevens has apparantly done well in pay as well as on the court in only his 4th season of coaching. He apparently was earning close to $400,000 in base pay prior to delivering them to the Final Four last year. His pay this year is reportedly around $900,000.

The story from the Indianapolis Business Journal does a nice comparison of several coaches with history from Indiana. What really works for some of the big time programs is the outside money that some schools have access too in regards to coaches compensation. According to the story, That Motta at Ohio State is only paid $360,000 by the university. What makes him millions is ther outside compensation.

I know we've talked about coaches compensation in other threads, but it is difficult to truly compare economies of different schools while paying taxes that support our public infrastructure - including universities. To me, its just fun to reconsider what a value we have with what some of our coaches get paid. Of course that always goes with acheiving some success at the DI level.
