North All-Stars cranks up defense for girls' basketball victory

    By Deb Smith

The North failed to pay attention to the old adage that teams don't play defense in all-star games.

The North All-Star girls' basketball team built a 12-point halftime lead on the strength of its defense and rebounding, and held off a second-half charge by the South All-Stars. The North held on for a 68-61 win in the annual girls' all-star game on Tuesday at Wachs Arena.

The coaching staff for the South team stressed the defensive part of the game during practices.

The North worked its game plan in the first half and forced the South to commit six turnovers and shoot just 39 percent from the field. In addition, the North squad led in rebounding by a margin of 17-9.

The South team regrouped at halftime and outscored the North 18-10 in the third quarter to trail by just four points.

The North sealed the game with two free throws by Jennifer Warkenthien of Willow Lake, who finished with game-highs in points with 17 and rebounds with 12.

Natalie Carda of Beresford paced the South with 10 points.

The South still leads the overall series at 12-7.

Today's all-star schedule begins with boys' and girls' golf at Lee Park Golf Course at 10 a.m., volleyball at 5:30 p.m. at Wachs Arena and boys' basketball at 8 p.m. at Wachs Arena. The cheer team will perform at halftime of the boys' basketball game.

[glb]Nice job by the two Jackrabbit recruits. Looks like they each led their team in points and rebounds. What will they do when they are on the same team? Only time will tell![/glb]
