Eden Prairie is THE program in Minneapolis and is always highly ranked and playing in the state championship... (usually against Joe Mauer's old school St Paul Cretin-Durham)

It lists Taylor at QB, but he's played other positions for EP like Tight End. I would guess he's being recruited at TE, DE or LB.

Trevor Hauser has a preferred walk-on from us and Illinois State.

"-Recruiting has definitely taken off as of late for Holmen running back Taylor Hauser (5-10, 212). The biggest news – two preferred walk-on invitations from Division I-FCS schools.

“Today, I was just offered as a walk-on at Illinois State,” Hauser said Monday evening. “I talked to their recruiting coordinator and he said he would love me to be a part of their program.

“Also, I have been offered the same thing (preferred walk-on) at South Dakota State as soon as I get accepted into their university,” Hauser said.

Nice find. He looks like a good athlete and if he is being recruited by that crowd, smart centers are always important. If he has enough frame and a nasty streak, he could be a very good find.

I am curious as to whether most/any athletes who are walk-ons and do prove themselves are awarded scholarships the following years? When are the scholarships presented? Seems that the focus is more on giving scholarships to new recruits.

I am not totally certain, but I think right out of fall camp and just before fall registration,scholarships are awarded. Having a perpetual scholarship in my name, we have an endowment banquet about the second week in September at which time, you get to meet the athlete who received your scholarship. I suspect the football coaching staff has been meeting all summer long with the various scholarship committes to make these many decisions. I do know they can split scholarships like in D2, and I believe there is a limit on how many can be split so I suspect too that the spliting is often is a reward to hard working walk on players. Some new recruits might not be getting a full ride and might be getting non-athlete assistances such as Pell grants. There are no doubt a lot of details that are not made public, but might be available under the freedom of information act.

I'm with you. Even in Nebraska, kids that get scholarships are primarily from the schools that rank in the upper half of enrollment. The small schools are represented well through the walk-on program. Of the 7 walk-ons/former walk-ons that had significant contributions with the Huskers this year, 4 of them were from high schools in the bottom half of enrollment. Only Alex Henery and Matt O'Hanlon were from large schools.

Walk-ons definitely have to prove themselves. Fortunately, kids in South Dakota have more opportunities to make D-1 teams as walk-ons than they used to.

The real cost is that of the student athlete in spending his time in practice sessions hoping to earn some scholarship money and playing time. I dont think we need any extra coaches to do that.

Yes the population of SD and Nebraska have something like a 300% difference. Nebraska has 1.8 Million and SD is about 750,000, plus USD is in D1.

If they come from a 9 man show and get a full ride, they had better have talent equal to Chad Greenway. Being from SD is not a right or entitlement for one of the 63 full rides at SDSU

I personally like to poke fun at the cornchusker state for their cultish fedish with the big red machine but it does help with their walk-on program.... Most people I know from Nebraska would do anything just to be able to suit up even if just once for the University of Nebraska.... Something that SDSU and the FCS just doesn't bring to people......

We've lived here for nearly 8 years and it is amazing how communities across that state become ghost towns during Husker games, even against the Louisana-Laughettes of the world. My wife loves to shop during those times as nobody is around, including the sales associates. I do have to confess that in my only experience in Memorial stadium on game day, that it is an experience second to none.

Doesn't do yet. To compare the two's ability isn't fair to SDSU. If the tem continues to make it to the playoffs and be a top 3 team in the conference a person may see kid growing up to want to throw on the Yellow and Blue.

Recruiting is hit or miss. A good walk-on program allows you more opprotunities to get a hit. However, in my opinion, we don't have the resources to build a ginormous walk-on program like Nebraska. We can barely pay the coaches we do have. Adding a large amount of walk-ons will require a lot more time for those already under paid coaches. Like you, I would like to see us be able to expand that program when it is financially feasable.

Nidaros offers a good comparison for walk-on's with the Huskers. Their walk-on program is in a strong rebuilding program under Pelini. Callahan did not want to waste his effort and the program died for a few years. He understood that it took significant work for both the walk-on students and the staff to manage that type of program, and many Husker fans recognized that he didn't like to work that hard.


I don't know how many Nebraska walk-on's are on the Husker roster, but here is a quick synopsis of what it entails.

• 47% of their roster of 147 players are from Nebraska and a significant portion are walk-on's
• 4 in-state walk-on's have become starters, with 4 more playing key roles
• Only 8 players of 147 on the roster are Jr/Sr walk-on or former walk-on players who eventually received a scholarship (that number will likely go up as Pelini has placed more importance on it)

Some of the key walk-on's include K-Alex Henery who will likely get a shot at the NFL, S-Matt O'Hanlon who was a national defensive player of the week this year, TE-Dreu Young who has started 12 games in the last two years, and CB-Lance Thorell who has played in 25 games, started in 6, and still has two years of eligibility left. Former SDSU recruit Jim Ebke is a walk-on for the Huskers and he could see his playing roll increase at safety or on special teams.

While I'd love to see a strong walk-on program similar to the Huskers, I don't think we can even approach the numbers they have based on their tradition and lack of competition. There are no other D-1 programs in Nebraska and their primary competition for walk-on's is SDSU, Iowa State, and UNO.

If you are recognizing the playing chances of SD kids as a developing trend, then that could be a positive in that the SD kids will have to work harder to be walk on's. What comes to mind is UNL. Since Bob DeVaney rebuilt the UNL program in the 1960's, kids in Nebraska have had to work hard to make it as a walk on. I don't know where the Nebraska Walk on program is under Pelani, but if flourished under Osborne and Solich. Something similar could develope in SD and that may not be all bad. The SD kids will have to weigh what is most important for them in terms of education goals, an education of a specific major offered by SDSU, or a chance to hit the ground playing elsewhere such as USF or Augie or even Dakota State. I think its hard to generalize here but for now SD kids seem to find their way to football scholarship money. ie Kjerstad is a prime example. I recall he was signed on letter of intent day, but do not know if he got a full ride right off the bat. He did however prove to Coach Stig that he deserved to be in his program. Others in the future will be given a chance to do the same.

I for one would not want our program be an 9 man all star team just to recruit SD kids, but our staff needs to grab the best they can that are out there and where they live becomes very secondary.

You guys all make great points. However, I'm gonna disagree with you JoeBoo. You said something about the years of 15 in state kids and how over half of them end of quitting or transferring. Look at the kids that we've brought from out of state. Those kids are just as likely to quit for reasons such as being homesick, the cold weather, and other reasons. I've taken some hits on here for my opinion but I wouldn't feel so strong about in state kids if I didn't see potential and talent. I just feel that it is sad that Coach Stig is saying that there is only one kid in South Dakota that is good enough for the team that he wants to be "South Dakota's team"

I'm sure Stig would like to have both Farniok and Gebhart from Sioux Falls Washington, but Farniok took the offer from Iowa State and Gebhart was recruited early and hard by the Bison (Hardie from O'Gorman also is going to the Bison, but I'm not sure if we would have offered him or not), so we don't always get to bring in certain talent from the state as well. I think this years talent is just a little down in the state, as it had about 3-4 (plus 4 good kickers) really good ones at the top, but there was a big drop off after that.

I believe one of them has already verballed to USD.

(From KELO sports) St. Thomas More kicker Kevin Robb has verbally committed to the USD football program, Cavaliers coach Wayne Sullivan tells KELOLAND Sports.

Robb informed USD of his decision Thursday, Sullivan said. The five-foot, 10-inch, 170 pound senior was Class 11A's all-state kicker.

Good info, the Coyotes are in dire need of a competent kicker and I think they have found one. Now, will Coach Meirkort stick with a freshman if he makes a few freshman mistakes?
