I had a thought on recruiting and the whole verbal thing. Does anybody know how this information gets out? Coaches can't talk about players until signing day, right? or is that just for basketball?

Does it go something like:

Recruit or recruits high school coach or family member contacts local media, local media reports verbals as they get wind of them. Signing day, all signed recruits are announced to the media via press release.

Anyway, we are recruiting all over the place, in addition to getting some pretty good local talent. Is it possible these recruits or their reps are just not contacting the Argus? Or is it possible that the coaches are telling recruits who have verballed not to talk to the media, only to have blockbuster announcements and huge hype come signing day (which is pretty close to the start of season ticket sales, I think)? Could this be a new strategy to increase season ticket sales in a year when the home schedule is less than stellar? If it is a new strategy, could AD Sell have something to do with it? Does UNI do anything like this? Looking at panthernation.com, they don't seem to have more than a handful of verbals right now either... unless I'm reading something wrong.

How does this process work exactly?

..and don't forget about the SF kid that announced his verbal to the Argus even though the school was not recruiting him!

recruiting news can only be made official from the recruit not the coaches but coaches can make really big hints, however in basketball coaches can make bigger hints at who they are because the numbers are so much smaller...

Also in football since there is no early signing day and because there is a level difference between us and the big shots there is no unofficial rule about recruiting kids who already made a verbal, in basketball there is more of a general unwritten rule where you don't actively recruit kids who have already verballed....

This year it seems that based on the fact that the instate recruits and general recruiting area being down, added with playoffs, and higher name recognition, with fewer long term holes and more of a need for JuCo's.... that this years recruiting class will be different then others...

The one ? I do have is can the coaches comment on JuCo's as soon as they are enrolled? I think you have until the following week or so to enroll so just because a JuCo isn't their on Wednesday doesn't mean for sure he isn't coming....

Coaches can comment on players once they have enrolled.

SFRF, you clearly have to much time on your hands or can't sleep at night? These thoughts, you must get them out of your head? Just kidding of course. I think most of the verbal news comes directly from the recruit or the recruits family. They can legally make any announcement they wish.

Come Feb 3rd? Signing day the Jacks will announce 18 - 20 young men that will continue the Jackrabbits climb to the top of the Valley Football Conference. I ammmmmmmmm excited.

The dead period in the second week of January is because of the football coaches' convention that week. If there wasn't a dead period, coaches who went to the convention would be at a recruiting disadvantage compared to those who stayed back. It also encourages coaching staffs to go to the convention as well, rather than handling campus visits. The other dead periods are generally to protect recruits during typical testing dates.

Yeah I've never really understood the whole "dead period" What is the use of it.... especially in January, when you are a month away from signing day I'd think that a "dead period" would just be stupid....

I think that the NCAA is all about money and making rules for stuff.

Pretty soon they'll divide the days up hour by hour.

"Coach Whipple of the East Overshoe State Bumpkins admitted today to contacting a recruit during the lunch hour, a designated 'dead' period by the NCAA. The NCAA lunch hour extends from 11:47AM local time to 1:06PM local time during school days and from 11:00AM to 1:23 PM local time on weekends and holidays. During summer vacation, lunch hour extends from 12:12PM to 12:57PM."

I think the dead period's over now, as (per TV's blog) the coaches are on the road right now.

You're right. We just came out of a dead period and are about to enter another one. (Although we are in a quiet period for JUCOs.)

January:
1: Dead(no contact)
2-3: Quiet(only on-campus visits)
4-9: Contact
10: Quiet
11-14: Dead
15-16: Quiet
17-30: Contact
31: Quiet

How does this process work exactly?

It seems to depend more on your local sports reporters than anything else. If they have the time and inclination, they are the ones who cultivate links with the high school coaches and call them at least once a week to find out if there have been any changes. Also, the big websites like scouts and rivals often get much of their info from the players themselves(at least for recruits at our level).

As for the lack of news at the moment, that's probably more from the NCAA dead period than anything else. In an attempt to protect recruits, the NCAA prohibits contact and visits around the semester break. That dead period ends in about a week and a half, so news should begin to flow again in 2-4 weeks after the next wave of campus visits.

A little perspective on recruiting numbers as of early January. Last year as of this date we had 5 verbal commitments, today we have 2. While those numbers may look bad as compared to some schools, the proof is in the pudding. We had an outstanding recruiting class last year with 18 players. I'm sure we will have an equally impressive if not better class this year.

Am I the only one who thinks the weather is perfect for bringing in recruits who will help our program?

1-If you want to play where the weather is always nice (or indoors for that matter), SDSU is probably not the place for you.
2-If you aren't that interested in schoolwork, SDSU is probably not the place for you.
3-If you are impressed with facilities, SDSU is probably not the place for you.
4-If you are interested in a big city atmosphere (clubs, entertainment, etc) SDSU is probably not the place for you.

However, SDSU might be a good fit for you:

1-If you are interested in playing for a top 25 FCS program.
2-If you want to dedicate a large portion of your time to schoolwork and earning a degree.
3-If you want to develop personal and professional skills that will lead you through the rest of you life.

While I am a little anxious to hear about some verbals and signings, I trust the coaches and am sure they will get the best players and people for the program.
