I'm told there's already a plan in place for a new backyard for whenever that construction project happens.

I understood the same. The Yankton Jackrabbit Club was built on the foundation of the tailgating experience and I can assure you the alcohol played little factor in that. We had well over 100 people at our site Saturday and I expect more for the Beef Bowl. Tailgating has provided the momentum and generated a level of excitement that will allow us to advance from just a club to an alumni group active in a number of different ways.

I look forward to talking less about the problems/complaints about tailgating and more about the positives. Doesn't mean we shouldn't voice our displeasures, however.

Just think when everything with the fieldhouse facility gets finalized, ready for site prep and all the exciting work that comes with new construction there might be no tailgating in the Backyard next year. Enjoy the Backyard while you can, things will change rapidly with the construction of the fieldhouse facility when it starts within the next year or so.

The new fieldhouse (a.k.a. North End Zone Builiding) is NOT going to spell doom to the Backyard. Tailgating will still commence as we have all kinds of room to move it to. Will things change, likely yes but it is a very, very good problem to have. That builiding is something we really need!!!

It's amazing the type of ingenuity that can stem from a desire to tailgate. If anyone's ever been to the Metrodome for a football game, or better yet Soldier Field, they have no set parking areas. You park in some office parking lot, or someone's apartment front yard or what have you. All the parking structures are broken off from one another and there is no sense of continuity or even a general tailgating feel. Soldier field requires you to walk over a bridge to get to the stadium which eliminates any ability to tailgate within even eye shot of the stadium for most people. However, tailgating is very prevalent and frequent at both places. All of which proves the point that if you give someone the ok to tailgate, they'll find a way to get it done and enjoy themselves in the process. Same will go for SDSU and it's future tailgating problems (as much as that is a contradiction of terms).

I was in Denver a few years ago and folks were tailgating a mile away! If people are gonna tailgate, they'll find a place!

As to Alex Brown, SDSU president, suggesting sale of beer at the game (if he was serious), be aware that only one Division 1 school in the nation, as far as I know, sells beer at games. Guess which one? Colorado, which sold its soul to Coors for $$$$. It ain't gonna happen. And having gone to NDSU for football games (outside before the Dome), they had a huge problem with beer being consumed in the stands (illegally) and they went through hell trying to clean it up.

And even Colorado has now ceased selling beer at football and basketball games.

One thing I am sure and that is the adminstration does not want a slow down in envolvement by alumni at athletic events. I believe the tailgating will continue and it should. Safety concerns and consumption of alchohol on the campus is in my opinion a rightful concern that belongs to the adminstration as the Pres has to answer to BOR and governor for all good and bad that happens on campus.

I thought last year, the Backyard was poorly lite and maybe that encourage additonal consumation of beverages in lieu of attending the game. If a guy is half gased and walks out on the road that runs on the west side of the backyard and is run over, that not good, plus, when our younger students come only to drink at the Backyard thats not the right message to be sent either.

This my final take on it and I trust it will all be worked out.

I dont think I accused you of trying to get bombed. I just supported the Admin positon on tailgating. Its going to make the CAS area safe for everyone, and thats what the Admin no doubts feels is a priority. If it means a half time ban, then so be it. If a half time ban were lifted, do you think this might be in an invite to get bombed? Especially if the Jacks are not on the board or trailing and playing poorly? Think about that for a moment.

I think it is a great idea, having to provide a Game ticket to enter the backyard. I know a number of people (non-students) who still came to tailgate last week and then just left at gametime. That is dissapointing. At least make them make their $12 (GA ticket) contribution to the athletic dept if they are goint to partake in tailgaiting. Halftime is tricky, it would be nice, but I can only imagine the headache or trying to enforce everyone returning to the game after halftime concludes. I would assume that it is difficult enough clearing the tailgate area once before the game, let alone twice in three hours.

I am weighing in kind of late after last week but read through the entire thread to see everyone's thoughts.

I thought things went fairly smoothly last week. Before the game it was tailgating as usual. My family and I went out and loaded up after The Pride played at halftime and didn't have any problems like others indicated.

My take is this, for the first week things went fine. It will certainly improve from week to week because everyone will know what to expect. The rules are very simple and UPD has a job to do. They can work on not ruffling feathers and becoming a kinder, gentler UPD but what did everyone expect for the first week. There couldn't be any leeway in how they went about things or it turns into a mess.

Beef Bowl is going to be an even bigger tailgate and if we all do a good job of informing everyone coming to tailgate in our spots it will go fine!

I was really worried about last week. There were even a few rumblings of a riot in protest of the new rules. Needless to say, I'm gald EVERYONE was adult enough to not do some thing that stupid.

Tailgating is a great addition for SDSU fans and I am more than willing to make a few concessions to keep it going!

What about closing it when halftime concludes and having to provide a game ticket to get in to the tailgating area. It makes sense anyways.

OK...my final take (said enuf already!): The present setup is fine, tailgating will go on, and by next year nobody will remember that it was ever any different. See everyone tomorrow in The Backyard!!!!!!
