Three Jacks Earn Academic All-District
BROOKINGS, SD - Three South Dakota State University football players have been named to the ESPN The Magazine University Division of the academic all-district seven football team for 2005.
Senior defensive back Mitch Klein is a repeat selection on the first team while place kicker Parker Douglass is also on the first team and running back Cory Koenig is a second-team selection. Academic all-district first-team selections will now advance to the Academic All-America ballot.
Klein, a senior from Dell Rapids, has a 4.00 grade point average majoring in electrical engineering. Douglas, sophomore from Columbus, NE, has a 3.903 in pre-med. And Koenig, a sophomore from Underwood, IA, has a 3.726 in biology.
Klein shares the free safety position with senior James Epps. He has 24 tackles this season. For his career, he has played in 30 games, has 66 career tackles.
Douglass has broken a bunch of SDSU kicking records, including points scored in a season by a kicker, and the Jacks still have two games to play. He has 82 points this season, including 37-of-38 on PATs and 15-of-r21 on field goals.
Koenig has started five games, had four straight 100-yard games, and is second on the team in rushing with 774 averaging 6.3 yards per carry with six TDs. He’s averaging 86 yards per game.
The ESPN The Magazine academic all-america teams are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. To be nominated for Academic All-America, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for consideration. District VII includes Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
