A friend of mine I and have been working on the Bell issue.. We have been trying to keep this under wraps for the time being... we have not received official word from the university that we would be able to bring it in..

Our idea was to have the cheer team strike the bell just prior to leading the team on the field.

Currently our prototype weighs in at about 250 some pounds, and is approximately 4" tall and is made of 3/16" welded steel.

We are looking for people to volunteer on this project as it is expensive for just 2 guys.
If we have this made, we will need to paint it and letter it (I was thinking Vinyal lettering and automotive paint), and build a clapper (prolly just going to hang like a 12# kettle ball).

Also if someone would like perform an FEA (Finite Element Analysis)to find the harmonics (I Think this can be done.. I'm an EE not a ME), I would be glad to send you the file in solid works format so perhaps the dimensions could be tweaked to increase tone and amplitude..

    Thoughts?

The bell could be permanently mounted on the outdoor viewing deck in front of the big windows.

What they needed there was a garage door.
With the asthetics of the south side of the building though, I don't think a garage door would fit. They will figure it out. Again, personally I feel like some sort of tunnel to walk through would make a good entrance.

Great example in this article http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5452951

    Seems rather obvious...

I like the idea of ringing a big bell to get things started, too. But have some great ex-players ring it. Jim Langer, Wayne Rasmussen. Adam Timmerman. Josh Ranek. Steve Heiden. Lynn Boden. Adam Vientieri (after he retires). Etc. There are a lot of prospects, and more in the making.

As for holding the team in the Dykhouse Center. I got a tour Saturday morning (thanks Rob Peterson) and the entry onto the field is not very condusive to a mass entrance onto the field. It's a double door with a post in the middle and the hallway leading out isn't big enough to hold the whole team. That's why I suggested a tunnel of some sort. Then most of the team is out and the remaining can filter into the hallway.

I love the bell idea. BUT, what if we got a CANNON. I LOVE cannon's going off at football games!!!!!! <sarcasm/>

It's early, we have a new facility. The game day atmosphere will get figured out. Just hope that the fans haven't checked out by that time.
Cannons are cool, too. No reason why they couldn't do both. Bell to intro the video, cannon to welcome the team onto the field.

I didn't realize there was a post in that door. That does complicate things. What they needed there was a garage door.

I've been asking for that damn giant cowbell for a couple years now. I also think it could be rung in the tailgate, maybe even do some fundraising. I'd shell out $5 to give it a gong! Or pay to let my kids do it.

Another twist on the bell idea would be to have some dignitary or other VIP ring the bell. Last Saturday, Casey Hillman could ring the bell. At Hobo Day, the governor rings the bell.

I'm not sure if a bell platform would fit between the north endzone and the field. One thing that really bothers me about the Dykhouse is how close it is to the field, eliminating even the possibility of seating in that endzone.

You could brand the platform with the bell on it each game with the game sponsor's logo or something.

I think what's missing in these changes is a sense of the history of the university. We need traditions that build on that. While I applaud the effort to do something new, I think it could be done differently and in a way that fits what I've seen attending SDSU football games for 40 years.

Here's my sense of the pregame, starting with the band's show.

End the band's show with the Yellow and Blue (certainly a tradition), saving Ring the Bells for the team's emergence.

Keep the team in the Dykhouse Center. Assign a GA (with Stig's permission) to hold them in there until their cue. Stig could tell the captains to obey that person's orders, an they would.

(You could ring the bell for the second half, too, maybe with the game sponsor or some other donor doing the honors).

Then run the video with a new song that will pump up the crowd. (For the second half, just play the fight song after the bell.)

Wait a few seconds after the end of the video (where the guy says to get on your feet for the Jackrabbits) to build a little tension in the place. Bring out Jack Rabbit first (crowd would like that), then out comes the team led by the cheerleaders with the flags. The band plays the fight song.

You could brand the platform with the bell on it each game with the game sponsor's logo or something.

Why not keep them in the Dykehouse Center with the doors closed and then when the intro video is done, open the doors and they run out? I don't see how that is so hard
