Kohtala Rounds Out UMKC Men's Basketball Coaching Staff
Former Alma College head coach joins Kangaroo program

Kansas City, Mo. - Head Coach Matt Brown announced today that Ed Kohtala has been named as an assistant coach with the UMKC men's basketball program. Kohtala, who coached with Brown at Florida in 1996-97, joins the Kangaroos after serving as the head coach at Division III Alma College in Alma, Mich., for the last six seasons.
"I have known Ed for the last 10 years and I've always been impressed with his professionalism both on and off the court," said Brown. "Not only is he a terrific teacher of the game, but more importantly, he is a wonderful person."
During his tenure at Alma, Kohtala oversaw all aspects of the program from budgeting-to-scheduling-to-alumni outreach, while also being an Adjunct Professor in Mathematics at the college. On the recruiting trail, he established a new recruiting philosophy and approach with particular attention to urban areas in Michigan. During his six-year run, Kohtala guided six players to all-conference honors and he coached an MIAA scoring leader. . . . (read more)
