Re: Bad news for USD Med Students

    OK_Rabbit,
The diffrence is that all of those other schools don't come to the state govt. with their grubby little hands out continually asking for money to bail them out of the situations they are in due to poor management.

One caveat for OK and others not privy to the current problems at USDSM. Fewer and fewer grads are choosing primary care and more are leaving the state for training and not coming back.

The are several factors contributing including the increasing cost to attend USDSM and the large discrepency in salary between primary care providers and subspecialists. It is tough to repay greater than 100K in student loans on a FP's salary. Loan repayment garuantees are fewer and fewer.

The quality of training at SD residency programs may also play a role. Focus needs to be placed on improving the residency opportunities for those interested in primary care who want to stay in SD.

SD needs a medical school and the state should support it. However, a medical school in Vermillion where there is no teaching hospital, no residency program and where only a portion of the faculty reside just doesn't make sense to me. Especially in the face of this most recent development.

I agree. The medical school should be entirely in Sioux Falls. It makes little sense to me to maintain the first two years of medical education in Vermillion. I wonder if that was part of the discussion when this new building was planned. That would have made sense.

UNO men and Women beat USD. Men needed a prayer at the buzzer to put the game into OT. Mueller missed a free throw that would have iced it.

Strange thread for this: But congrats to UNO anyway. I always enjoy a good USD beatdown.
