Not a good news day for Penn State or Herman Cain.

I bet he doesn't make it to the end of the year. While he did the legal minimum, his lack of a moral compass is beyond disturbing.

I thought that this was actually a pretty good take on this aspect dealing with moral compass. It is written by Drew Magary and published on Deadspin, which is usually a combination that leads to d*ck jokes and other crassness, but this piece was actually well written.

I think the reason Paterno went to his AD and didn't go to the cops is because it provided him with the chance to have it both ways. This way, he was able to "report" it, without having to be the person who takes the significantly braver step of actually calling the police.
That a great deal of people chose to do nothing after that is proof of how easily a cover-up can spontaneously take root and linger. We'd all like to think we'd do the noble thing when faced with such a seemingly obvious choice. The truth is, we might not.
Caveat: The comment section, as always, is full of people trying to make light of the situation with ****ty jokes, so just avoid.

Deadspin has another interesting piece of information

          http://deadspin.com/5856887/as-recen...state-campuses

Sandusky has fooled a bunch of people for a long time. What stopped the camp was an investigation by the Attorney General starting 2009. See no evil....

            Re: Penn State

Both Pennsylvania and SD have similar child protection laws.

Reporting requirements can be found at 23 Pa.C.S. 6311 and SDCL 26-8A-3:

            PA Law: http://myalt.us/2691
            SD Law: http://myalt.us/2692

An important difference is this component of the PA law:

"Whenever a person is required to report under subsection (b) in the capacity as a member of the staff of a medical or other public or private institution, school, facility or agency, that person shall immediately notify the person in charge of the institution, school, facility or agency or the designated agent of the person in charge. Upon notification, the person in charge or the designated agent, if any, shall assume the responsibility and have the legal obligation to report or cause a report to be made in accordance with section 6313. This chapter does not require more than one report from any such institution, school, facility or agency."

SD Law requires immediate notification of the state's attorney.

IMO, the Pennsylvania law enables a shocking amount of buck passing.

              Re: Penn State

Penn State cancelled JoePa's press conference today. according to Joe's son the President of the University cancelled it, and that JoePa was prepared to take questions on the matter.

Penn State is listening to lawyers and I understand that, but if they want any hope of even being mentioned as a football school in the future they need to let their coach speak. The NY Times is reporting that Penn State is preparing for JoePa to exit. Whether that means they are canning him or he is resigning IDK.

My outside view on this is too many people are talking to lawyers and trying to save their behind then save any face for the University or themselves.

Reports are that Joe Patterno's son Scott is in the process of setting up an off campus press conference for Joe to speak at. For his sake I hope he is and that this happens and that he answers every question.

My idiot brother is a HUGE Penn State fan and he is heading out there this weekend. I had a chance to go, but didn't like the odds of wearing RED at State College. I told him that if Joe PA is coaching Saturday - he should take it all in, because he will have been in Happy Valley to see him coach his last game. That house of cards is about to fall and Grand PA will not be standing too much longer.

                  Re: Penn State

This is like 100 different people who only care about covering their own behind then to get down to the facts of the matter.

Supposedly the President cancelled the Press conference. JoePa said he would hold one off campus and a Board of trustee member told him that he would be fired on the spot if he did so. I understand that lawyers are involved and are saying don't tell anything but they have to let JoePa talk. And i think he deserves the opportunity to speak on the matter and say what he claimed to know about the situation when it happened.

Put yourself in the shoes of a person involved in this debacle at any level. Who would be the first person you would call? I'm sure you'd like guidance on how to properly handle this matter so you didn't land yourself in hot water with your bosses or the authorities.
"All I know is what I read on the message boards."
"Oh, well, there's your problem, then."

I don't disagree that taking a lawyers advice is the wrong thing to do. I just think they look really bad in doing so.

You should have went. Penn State football has a good of a following as Nebraska. I recall while training for my Govt job, my trainer was a Penn State grad and receive in the mail for the alumni assoication, 30 chances for a season ticket at PSU. We were working at an electric coop in the middle of no where it seem, but sort of the central part of Penn. He laid a little box to place the money and the 30 chances on a table in the lunch room. By noon all the chances were gone and he had 30 bucks to turn in to the Alum Association. People in PA do follow the Littany Lions with passion. This passion has gone on for decades in PA as well as Nebraska.

Some how I suspect the next coach will be successful despite how this whole affair cranks out, even with NCAA sanctions, there still is a great program in place.

I just got out of a teaching methods class and were told point blank. If in the same situation, do the same thing.

The reasoning is that because we are not trained psychologist and it was second hand that we could put ourselves and the case in jeopardy. The only mistake JoePa and the GA made were not writing down what they saw/heard. And maybe they did.

If I ever come upon to the same situation as the GA (walking in on a crime) I will call the police. That is for sure.
