  • Tribe scouts SF for a Major Resort Casino

Yesterday's Argus had a feature article about how the Santee Tribe in Flandreau and owners of the Royal River Casino are working with unnamed promoters in Sioux Falls in building a major resort Casino. What seems to be driving this movement is the loss of revenue from a proposed Iowa Casino which is to be located near Larchwood and would supposely take millions of revenue out of South Dakota.

They mention if this proposed casino gets all the approvals, and is operational, the revenue for this casino would pay for the new events center being proposed. State tax on gaming revenue is 9% so there are bucks to be collected and spent provided the new governor approves the plan and the mayor of Sioux Falls also endorses the project.

There appears to be much opposition and other gaming interests in the state may find a strange bed fellow in that the anti-gambling forces will most likely be joining them in opposition. A tribal group can purchase property within driving distance of their reservation and I believe Flandreau would be twenty some miles from this site. The problem with this project as seen by others is that if one tribal group gets special approval, then all tribes in SD will want the same deal.
