    SDSU quarterback race heats up

    The race to replace record-setting quarterback Ryan Berry is under way at South Dakota State, and the most experienced candidate has set the tone.

    Upcoming senior Ryan Crawford, the only one of the four quarterbacks on the roster to have spent a full year in the system, is about three months ahead of schedule in returning from a wrist injury that required surgery. He is participating in spring ball without limitations, and he has proved to be elusive even if his throws are lacking their usual zip.

    That's great news, especially the progress report on Crawford. I was at the NDSU game last fall and watched Crawford step into a tough situation and do a very credible job.

      There's no substitute for experience. Ryan deserves a shot if he can get his wrist back in shape.
