(Rapid City, Junior) Ben Jasinski's 6-foot, 10.5-inch winning high jump is a new SDSU indoor school record and was one of several highlights at the Bison Classic in Fargo, 1/17/09. (SDSU's Cam Helder was second at 6-8).

Jasinski finished second in the triple jump, 48-feet, 8-inches. (Lennox, Freshman) Jarod Vlastuin made jumping 23-feet, 7-inches in the long jump look easy (second place was seven inches behind him). (Rapid City, Freshman) Mike Krsnak won the mile and the 1000.

For the women, Heather Wollman (Bridgewater, Junior) ran :56.52 to win the 400 -- an outstanding indoor time, particularly for this early in the season. (Parker, Junior) Nicole Davis won the 1000; (Rapid City, Junior) Brittany Garner ran away from the field in the 200 and (East Grand Forks, ND, Sophomore) Kelsey Aune had a convincing win in the 3000. (Grove City, MN, Senior) Sara Ackman won the shot put: 46-feet, 10.25-inches.

Results are available online at GoBison.com but I was at the meet and it appears there are some errors in the results. They are accurate for the most part but there will be some changes. Here's the LINK

This was a very nice 'first meet of the season' for the Jackrabbits (actually, some of the 'Rabbits participated in a couple meets before the break but the indoor season has now started in earnest. Not all Jackrabbits participated in the meet.

        Sounds like track is back.
Or do we need to wait for the outdoor season for that proclamation?

Track and Field is on the way back.

Some top performers for NDSU didn't participate in the meet. It's an early meet but we show a lot of promise.

For the women: here's the GoJacks.com story link (note, when reading, Garner's 200 was the winning time, not sixth best in the meet -- casual track fans might not see the significance of the time: it is sixth best in school history; same with Ackman's shot put: fifth best in school history). LINK.

For the men, here's the GoJacks.com story link. I think the story has an error: Vlastuin won the long jump, not Jasinski. LINK

The coaches noted a short while ago that SDSU has the potential to put three men over the 7-foot mark in high jump this year. The provisional qualifying standard for the DI Indoor Nationals in the high jump is 2.14 meters which converts to 7.021 feet.

How does not having an indoor running facility and also an outdoor track on Campus affect our program and recruiting as compared to NDSU and USD's programs?

                Re: Bison classic

There's no question facilities affect recruiting and the lack of good training facilities has a negative effect. USD's Dakota Dome, for all its faults as a basketball facility and even a football facility, is a very good indoor track facility. NDSU's Bison Sports Arena is quite dated (opened in about 1971) but even so, is a servicable indoor practice facility.

The lack of an indoor facility is a special challenge for our coaches. Somehow they have been dealing with it quite well. Their jobs, however, would be a lot easier and we would attract even more good track and field athletes if we had a good indoor facility.

Outdoor facility: SDSU and Brookings have cooperated once again for the benefit of both parties. The new outdoor track near Brookings High School will be ready this Spring and is set up for college meets (e.g. steeplechase pits; eight lanes). It is a nice outdoor facility on a budget (the running surface is the soft black track that is usually made of a combination of asphalt and rubber, will work but is not the most expensive by a long shot). We will be able to host the Summitt League meet on the Brookings track. When the track was being planned, a long-time member of the Brookings School Board who happens to be a huge track and field fan (was a national-class hurdler for Augustana in the early 70s) made sure that the track was done right and it will work well until an on-campus facility can be built. [In these days of tight budgets, SDSU and the City of Brookings and the Brookings School District deserve a pat on the back for finding solutions to common challenges.]

With the Brookings track available, SDSU can concentrate on the phase of the Dykhouse Center which will include an indoor track and if the money shows up, the plans are for a track that could be a 300-meter track (most indoor tracks are 200 meter...the 300 meter track has corners that are quite close to an outdoor turn).

Facilities are very important for recruiting. So is having success. There's not a lot we can do short-term on facilities so we're going the success route. We've been fortunate to have good coaches -- we'll soon lose assistant Greg Binstock (has had quite an impact on the jumpers) but he's being replaced promptly.

                I keep buying Powerball tickets.
