Would we, should we take him?

Absolutely. Any time we have the opportunity to get a great athlete in an SDSU uniform, we have to pursue it. He's proven to be good enough to get snaps at a BCS conference school so there is certainly potential there.

      Re: Philip Bates

Can he transfer down (FCS) mid-way through the season?

Not sure what to think about taking a transfer at a position like QB, even if he is an FBS/BCS transfer. In my mind it's a slippery slope...what kind of message does it send?? But, that's why I'm a fan and not a coach!

Personally, I like the idea of possibily having Tommy O'Brien at QB for at least three years at SDSU, but that's just me.

I agree we do need to pursue this qb chase and see where it goes. I think Mr. Bates probably has a great deal of talent more than what we have seen at QB in some time. But reading the article, there seems to be a number of other schools that are interested and we may loose out in the end. He wants to be the starting QB and if he does not get that, then he will probably move on. Note that the Phil Bates Sr, is sort of his agent in talking to coaches. I think we may see OBrien at QB three years.

Let him go somewhere else. History has never been on SDSU's side with transfers. While there may have been a couple that have worked out, of which I can name none, for the most part transfers eat up a scholarship and don't pan out.

While Bates may be talented what unknowns are there with him? How does he fit in with his teammates? He never talked to the head coach about getting a release from his scholarship...that's not a good sign in my book. Have the respect for your coach to look him in the eye and tell him you're leaving and thanks for the opportunity. I could go on, but I think my opinion is clear.

Interesting. I don't think we'll go after him. Should we? I might go with yes. I will say, though, that we have a QB waiting in the wings who should be pretty good. In my opinion, it's the first time in a long, long time that we've had a QB recruit that we can be excited about. I'm talking about O'Brien (sp?) who is redshirting this year.

I fall on this side, let someone else take a chance on him. Look at Augie and the struggles they have had with DI transfers at QB. Things appear better this year but the level of competition is also a lot less. I don't see this young man fitting well with our program. He is thinking primarily about himself and I don't want that kind of attitude introduced to our guys. That said, its a choice those in charge should be trusted to make.

                  Re: Philip Bates

I would agree with you both. We were listed in the article and that's why I threw it out there.

It's very early so it's pure wild speculation, but does everyone think that Crawford is the front runner for starting next year? Who gives us the best shot at making the playoffs?

I'm pretty certain that Ryan Crawford will be our QB next year. O'Brien is talented, but can anybody imagine Coach Stig putting a RS Fr. out there at QB when there's a senior available?

Philip Bates has USD transfer written all over him.

Yes. If he's better. If its close, no way.

Better at what? He's probably a better pure passer today. But does he have the maturity to lead the team? No way.

Look, I hope O'Brien is a great one, and I expect he will be. But I know from talking to people that he's not going to be ready to be a team leader next year. Give him a year backing up Crawford and then he can take over.

i would rather have corey jeske starting next year over crawford, but that is me, he is more mobile.

Another knock on O'Brien is that he has a really tough time taking a hit. That was very evident even during the open practice I attended before the season started. From what I know, that is hard to overcome but hopefully he can do it. His arm was especially impressive that night.
