    Jackrabbit tennis teams shine in Omaha

    OMAHA – The last time South Dakota State competed at the Omaha Collegiate Championships, the Jackrabbits came away with a total of three wins. On the first day of Saturday’s competition, the Jacks came away with 23 total wins and every player picked up at least one win.

    Bryna Nasenbeny and Emma Wylie teamed-up in Flight A doubles, and after dropping their first match 8-3 to the Mastro/Nakaoka team from Creighton, they defeated the Nunez/Rockne team from South Dakota 8-2 to advance to the consolation finals.

    In Flight B doubles round robin action, Carrie Jansen and Nellie Bloomberg defeated the Waltman/Hagen team from South Dakota 8-6 in their first match and then beat the Thomas/Olson team from Nebraska-Omaha 8-6 in their second match of the day to enter Sunday’s final two matches with a perfect 2-0 record.

    Caitlin Brannen and Megan McDougall dropped both of their Flight B doubles matches on Saturday, but get two more chances to pick up a win in round robin play on Sunday.

    Katie Elifson and Bethany Goeden lost their opening round robin match 9-7 to the Christy/Dobey team from Nebraska-Omaha in Flight C doubles, but rebounded to beat The Nielson/Wheeland team from Nebraska-Omaha 8-2 in their second match. Elifson and Goeden get one more shot on Sunday in round robin play.

    In singles action, Nasenbeny fell in her opening match 6-4, 6-0 to Rachel Faulk from Nebraska-Omaha, and then dropped her consolation match 7-6, 6-1 to Shadi Soleymani from South Dakota. She plays Traci Miklestad from Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday for seventh place.

    Brannen picked-up a first-round win in Flight B singles, 6-4, 6-1 over Isabel Nunez from USD, but fell to Nicole Nakoaka in the second round 6-2, 6-2. She plays Brynne Wischer from North Dakota on Sunday for third place.

    Wylie fell in her first round Flight B singles match 6-1, 6-0 to Kelsey Schmidt from Creighton and her lost in her first consolation match to Heather Hottman from UNO 6-2, 6-0. Wylie plays Samantha Thomas from UNO on Sunday for seventh place.

    Bloomberg defeated Emily Cullison from North Dakota 7-6, 2-6 (10-8) in a hard-fought first round match in Flight C singles, but fell in her second round match 6-2, 6-3 to Sarah Cadwallader from Creighton in the second round. She plays Katie Wessman from UND for third place on Sunday.

    McDougall beat Caitlin Christy from UNO 6-1, 6-2 in her Flight D first round match and beat Tiffany Reiseneur from North Dakota in the second round to advance to the championship match on Sunday.

    Jansen fell in her opening Flight D singles match 6-0, 6-1 to Leesa Cadwallader from Creighton, but advanced to the consolation championship match with a 1-6, 6-2 (10-5) come from behind win over Jenna Neilson from UNO.

    Elifson won both of her round robin matches in Flight E singles, defeating Diana Dobey from UNO 6-2, 7-5 and Kaitlyn Deragsich from USD 6-0, 6-1.

    Goeden won her first match in Flight E singles 6-1, 6-2 over Deragsich from USD, but fell in her second match 6-2, 6-1 to Sarah Wheeland from UNO.

    Both Elifson and Goeden play one more round robin match on Sunday.

    The Jackrabbit men also faired well in Omaha on Saturday, starting with Corey Paluch and Michael Engdahl, who teamed-up to beat the McAvoy/Obermeier team from Creighton 8-4 in their first round Flight A doubles match. They went on to beat the Ward/Lube team from Creighton by the same 8-4 score to advance to the championship match on Sunday.

    Jeff Hughes and Wade Kippley dropped their first round match in Flight A doubles 8-6 to the Elson/Nagy team from Creighton and their consolation match 8-5 to the McQuistan/Peterson team from UNO. They play for seventh place on Sunday.

    Alex Lauseng and Justin Pyle won both of the round robin matches in Flight B doubles, 8-0 over Diamantis/Hupf from UNO in the first match and 8-0 over DeCock/Robertson from UNO in the second round. They play one more round robin match on Sunday.

    Paluch won his first match in Flight A singles 6-3, 6-3 over Marcus Hansen from UNO, but lost in the second round 6-3, 5-7 (10-5) in the second round. He plays Gabe Nagy from Creighton on Sunday for third place.

    Jeff Hughes lost his Flight A singles first round match 6-3, 6-1 to Creighton’s Jose Guerra, but came back to beat Hanson from UNO in a tiebreaker 6-2, 5-7 (10-3) to advance to the consolation championship on Sunday.

    Kippley dropped his Flight B singles first round match 6-0, 6-0 to Bryan Lube from Creighton, but won his consolation match 6-4, 6-0 over John Diamantis from UNO to advance to the consolation championship where he faces teammate Justin Pyle.

    Pyle lost his first match 6-0, 6-3 to Chase Peterson from UNO, but defeated Matt Nohl from UNO to advance to the consolation championship.

    Lauseng carried his doubles momentum into his Flight B singles play on Saturday, defeating Ivan Yakovlev from UNO 6-3, 6-2 and Ryan Robertson from UNO 6-0, 6-3 to advance to Sunday’s championship match.
