I watched from the midway point of the first half till the end. Definitely a game we could have won as we squandered several good scoring opportunities - seemed to rush things on the offensive end instead of settling the ball and making an extra pass on three or four runs. Goalkeeping was shaky at times as well. The overtime goal should have been punched clear but we missed it. Good game to build on though as the team's potential is evident and the girls play hard. This was the first one that counted after all. I look forward to a solid year from these ladies.

Blue, I know the referee said it didn't count, but do you know what the ruling was...did he rule time ran out (ball was in the air from a corner kick before the time ran out), or did the ball not get into the net? Tough loss, because Jacks really rallied at the end.
thebluehatman
09-13-2008, 12:17 AM
Lang said the linesman said it was good but the ref waved it off. The ball needs to be in the net at 90:00 according to the rules. The team was going to look at video to confirm.

The Jacks in my opinion played some of their best offensive games this weekend. Jacks named to the all tournament team were: Steph Peterson, Vanessa Paswaters, Erin Kasmarik, Kelsey Ferguson. Kellyn Farrell had a great tourney even though she didn't score, she had 12 shots. The Jacks are back to .500 on the year and look to get another win before going into conference play would be big. Comparing the other teams in the league at this point might be irrelevant, after seeing NDSU play and keeping tabs on the other teams the Jacks may be the cream of the crop this year.

The Jacks have lost senior defender Alex Schaller with a knee injury in the Northern Iowa game. As of right now the team isn't sure what it is. The Jacks will miss Alex's hard play, tackles, and corner kicks. I believe she can't get a redshirt as she has played too much. The Jacks are gonna miss her and I'm going to miss her tough play on the field.

The Westerwinds sit at 4-3-2 on the season, they are 0-1 in Summit League play losing to Southern Utah. Western is 2-3-1 on the road this year. Southern Utah who comes in Sunday is 3-5 on the season, 1-0 in Summit play. They are also 0-2 on the road this year. The Jacks are playing like a potential conference champion so far this year. I don't know if that is supposed to be a "left-handed" compliment or not, Blue. Consider the fact that the Argus budget for sending Terry up here for athletic events is limited...and in the past the local newspaper hasn't even had anybody at very many events. I'm glad to see some coverage these days in the Register...finally.

A quick tease for this weekend's soccer preview.
The first place Jackrabbit soccer team continues a five game homestand this weekend against Centenary and Oral Roberts on Friday and Sunday respectively. SDSU sits at 4-0 in Summit League play and has a chance to wrap up a conference tournament berth at home. The Jacks have owned the Summit League with a record of 9-1-2 in last two years.
“We’ve started to play more complete games,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “If you get six wins in the conference you are pretty much assured of getting one of the top four seeds. We can set one of our goals aside and start to look forward to NDSU and Oakland at the end of the season.”

Not sure why they aren't online. I can try to find out though. Keep this in mind, the Jacks haven't allowed a goal in over 620 minutes of play/or 10 hours. According to the latest NCAA RPI rankings, SDSU is ranked #155 and Seattle is #184. Should be a good game.
I know that Seattle U. is in the first year of transition, however they are ranked in the NCAA RPI. I know the UxD's schools and others in their first year of transition are not listed in the NCAA RPI for D-1 schools.
BHM, since you are the resident expert on women's soccer and volleyball, maybe you can answer this. How can Seattle U. be considered in the NCAA RPI, but other transitional teams are not. I know the NCAA allows D-2 teams to pick one sport for both men and women, that they can compete at the D-1 level (Non-Football or Basketball). Was Seattle U. competing at the D-1 level in women's soccer when they were D-2?
If Seattle U. has been competing at the D-1 level in women's soccer, then this should be a really good test for the Jacks. Typically I don't feel that transitional teams can compete real well against D-1 teams, but Seattle has a decent team, it appears.
Enjoy the game and thanks for the game updates, BHM.

This is Seattle's first year. They were a top 15 Division 2 school team for most of last year and lost in the Far West Regional. They are 7-2-3 on the season and have beat some decent teams. Seattle has played a tough schedule this year in my opinion, although I'm not completely sure of how tough some of the teams they beat are. They did beat an Eastern Washington squad that we lost a heartbreaker to.
Lang and staff know this will be a tough week. Obviously, they play tonight, Monday, Friday, Sunday to close out the season. This is their tough part of the schedule. Although the turn around from this game to NDSU on Monday will be a little easier in the aspect of training.
Actually looking at the RPI rankings, I believe there is several other first year teams in the rankings. SIU Edwardsville, Houston Baptist are several other teams in the rankings. I can try to find out the rest of the answers after the game tonight.

from staff reports • November 10, 2008
MACOMB, Ill. - With another shutout and another clutch goal by its top scorer, the South Dakota State women's soccer team earned its first bid to the NCAA Division I tournament Sunday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on the campus of Western Illinois.

SDSU soccer claims Summit championship
Posted: Monday, Nov 10th, 2008
BY: Nick Hartley & Staff Reports
The South Dakota State University women's soccer team took home its first-ever Summit League Championship trophy after defeating No. 1 seed Oakland University (Mich.), 1-0 , Sunday afternoon on a cold, windy day at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on the campus of Western Illinois University.
"It's hard to measure something this big," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "It was certainly a historic win and I'm very proud of the team."
Senior forward Erin Kasmarik put the Jacks ahead 1-0 with her 10th goal of the season and fifth game-winner . Kasmarik, who was named tournament MVP, took a pass from Illinois native Kayla Braffet and beat goalkeeper Kim Herbst with a header in the 12th minute.
"Kaz had a great weekend," said Wedemeyer. "She had some incredibly important goals and deserved the tournament MVP award."
Both teams had opportunities to score, but stingy defense prevailed. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso made two saves for SDSU in the sixth and eighth minute to keep the Golden Grizzlies off the board. SDSU missed its fair share of opportunities, as well, including Danni Healy hitting the post on a shot in the 15th minute.
"I think we did a pretty good job of taking advantage of opportunities," Wedemeyer said. "I think we had a few chances to seal the game and we didn't take advantage, but we did what we had to do." Lograsso ended the game with five saves for her 14th win of the season and 10th shutout of the season. Oakland held a 13-8 shot advantage and a 2-0 cornerkick advantage in the match.
"She (Lograsso) had a very solid game," said Wedemeyer. "She made things look easy and led the game well. She came off the line when needed to and was very solid."
Joining Kasmarik on the alltournament team from SDSU were midfielder Chelsea Goosen, forward Kellyn Farrell and defender Kelly Larson.
"There isn't much time (to prepare)," said Wedemeyer. "This is a long trip home, and we'll get back early Monday morning. We'll turn around Monday evening and figure out who we play and start preparing come Tuesday."
