  • Peterson wins MN Match Play Championship

Congrats to Trent Peterson on winning the MN Match Play Championship(They call it the MN Players Championship)!!
This is HUGE tourney for Trent to win, as there are some fantastic ameteur players in MN and a lot of them have or do currently play D-I golf all over the country.

I believe Trent will also be playing in the SD Match Play coming up here in July along will most of the other SDSU Men's golf team, and after the MN Match play win, I'm sure he will be one of the favorites.

Just heard tonight that possibly Trent Peterson had just won the Minnesota stroke play as well in a playoff. That is quite an accomplishment. Great playing Trent!

You heard correct. Trent eagled 18 today to get into a 3-man playoff. You can read all about it here:

        http://www.mngolf.org/press_release.cfm?id=2003

Here is a part that stuck out most to me:

As a result, he became the third person to sweep the MGA's two biggest prizes -- the Players' (Match Play) and the Amateur (Stroke Play) championships -- in a single season.

It was first done in 1981 by Tom Lehman, and Andy Paulson duplicated the feat in 2006.

As a matter of fact, Peterson, a former state high school champ from Eagan who will start his senior year at South Dakota State in a few weeks, has now won the last three MGA events he entered, because he combined with Cory Blenkush to win the State Four-Ball last August.

          That is absolutely incredible!

The level of play in Minnesota is extremely high and to sweep the events is an amazing feat! To be a state amateur champion in Minnesota is a huge honor. To sweep is almost impossible as the above post mentions.

In the company of Tom Lehman, not to shabby. Trent is also about as nice a young man as you could want to meet and a good student. A true gentleman on and off the course. Not sure about his plans after SDSU but his talent and demeanor may give him a promising future as a professional.

Coach Baszler deserves a great deal of credit for building a solid program in a very short time. They are going to be very tough this next year. There are several players that are capable of winning tournaments as individuals and the teams depth will make them contenders often.

          Congrats Trent!

Oh by the way, Trent is also a student that excels in the classroom and has been honored for his scholastic efforts. The article from www.gojacks.com is linked below.

I'm thinking about throwing a "Bat Signal" up tonight to see if he shows up in a cape and driving up a tricked out Club Car.

Re: Peterson wins MN Match Play Championship

And the summer continues to get better for Trent. Yesterday he finished 2nd at the MN State Open, a professional event!

Here are tidbits from an MNGolf.org article about the MN State Open:

                  ...

Brett Swedberg, who earned his first first-place check of his professional career earlier this month (in a Dakotas Tour event in Sioux Falls), got another one at Bunker Hills, after closing with a 68 and tying Trent Peterson for second place at 209. Both Katayama and Peterson, who will start his senior year at South Dakota State in five weeks, are amateurs, which meant that Swedberg got the $9,000 that goes to the low pro.

Peterson, who is having a summer for the record book, shot 69 to get his share of second. The former state high school champion from Eagan won the MGA Players' (State Match Play) Championship in June, and he won the State Amateur (Stroke Play) last Wednesday. Only two other players -- Tom Lehman and Andy Paulson -- have done that in a single year. Peterson was trying to become the first ever to add the State Open title to the two State Ams and claim a new kind of Triple Crown of Minnesota amateur golf.

He came close, and his combined 1-1-2 finish for the three events is the best that's ever been achieved, bettering the 1-2-3 by Clayton Rask last year.

(The traditional Triple Crown of Minnesota amateur golf comprises the State Am, State Open and State Publinx. Only one player won all three in a single year, That was Gene Hansen, and he did it in consecutive years: 1961 and '62. In 1998, James McLean won the State Am and the State Open, but didn't play in the State Publinx. Instead, he played in the Pine to Palm that week, and won it, too.)

Re: Peterson wins MN Match Play Championship

More from Terry in his latest blog post:

So Geoff Mead wins the South Dakota stoke play and Trent Peterson finishes second at the Minnesota State Open. Just another Sunday for the stunning SDSU golf team.

To recap the summer so far:

Peterson previously won the Minnesota stroke and match tournaments and finished second in the South Dakota two-man.

Tim Kalil was second in the South Dakota match play, one of three Jacks in the final eight.

Kyle Vandevoort was third in the North Dakota stroke play.

Justin Jenkins - a quarterfinalist in the North Dakota match play - was co-medalist at the U.S. Open local qualifier in Sioux Falls.
