  • Watertown's Pickrel

Watertown standout wrestler (and student) Aaron Pickrel has signed to enroll at SDSU and wrestle for the Jackrabbits. Aaron is not only a great wrestler, but he's a fabulous student and a fine individual. He's the kind of kid we need to retain in South Dakota as the wrestling program continues to build.

Pickrel's high school career record was 152-11. He finished his senior year 40-2 and placed second at 119 in the Class A tourney. Aaron was 35-6 and placed fifth in the 103 class as a freshman; 38-1 and third at 103 as a sophomore; 39-2 and third at 112 as a junior. He won four straight ESD titles and four straight Region !A titles.

Other stats (keep in mind as you review these, SDSU greats Rick Jensen on Mike Engels were Watertown Arrows): Aarons hold the WHS school record for career pins at 85, career team points scored at 932, and most wins in a season, 40.

This year Aaron finished fifth in the national tourney sponsored by the National High School Coaches Association, earning All-America honors. I believe that was the top finish by a South Dakota wrestler.

Aaron is academic all-state and has been named to the National High School Coaches Association's Academic honor squad.

Good signing by Coach Liles and his staff.

Great signing. With Walraven and Pickeral signing, we have some real good young wrestlers. Just because some are good high school wrestlers, doesn't mean they are going to be good college wrestlers. But, these two have some real potential and work ethics. Good job, Jacks...
