  • SDSU Foundation President Retiring

    http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs...9066/1001/NEWS

A longtime fixture at South Dakota State University Foundation will step down on Dec. 31.

David Marquardt of Sioux Falls has served as foundation president and chief executive officer for nine years and joined the foundation in 1996. He said he made the decision two years ago and it tied together nicely with former SDSU President Peggy Miller resigning.

“It seemed to make sense with a new president coming on, bringing in a new CEO and taking advantage of a time to retire,” he said.

Steve Erpenbach, who has been vice president of development for three years, will succeed his boss. He is a former state director for former U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle.

Okay, can somebody explain the differences and purposes of the SDSU Foundation and the Alumni Association?

The Foundation solicits and invests money for the benefit of SDSU. The Alumni Association solicits friends (and reaches out to SDSU Alumns) for the benefit of SDSU. Fund raising vs. Friend raising.

Official Mission Statement of the Alumni Association: Mission Statement
To foster a spirit of loyalty and fellowship among graduates, faculty, students, former students and friends of South Dakota State University, and to direct an organized cooperative effort for the advancement, development, achievement and honor of both South Dakota State University and its alumni.

I think having these two functions separated and operating separately allows SDSU to cover more ground. It takes leadership in both groups to work together and to compliement one another. I saw first hand when this did not happen, and its gets to be a big problem for everyone on campus.

UND is one institution that has these two groups together in one organization. I dont know how they compare with SDSU in terms of fund raising, but I think they would function better separating the two. It allows for more alums to participate with two groups. There are a few people who serve in both groups, but not many. The VP of Adminstation, Executive directors of both are some of the few who over lap in both groups.
