    Release: 11/29/2007

BROOKINGS, S.D. – A pair of standout athletes signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, indicating that they plan on enrolling at South Dakota State next fall and competing for the Jackrabbit volleyball program.

Parkston (S.D.) High School senior Kelli Fiegen and Brookings High School senior Ellyce Youngren both signed on with the Jackrabbits.

“Kelli will have the opportunity to make a big impact in the middle position in 2008,” said SDSU head coach Andrew Palileo. “We have a long history of developing some great middle blockers and I think Kelli will be one of them. Not only is she a great student and athlete, but also a great person.”

Palileo thinks that Youngren can come in and make an immediate impact as well.

“Ellyce will also have the opportunity to produce in 2008. She can effectively play all three positions in the front row, which gives us the depth to endure a long season. I believe her attitude and the way she plays the game makes her a perfect fit for the Jackrabbit volleyball program.”

A five-time varsity letter winner at Parkston High School, Kelli Fiegen earned team MVP honors and team academic honors in all four years on the team. She also earned all-conference honors in her sophomore through senior years.

Fiegen also earned All-State First-Team honors in 2005 and in 2007.

More pretty important info in the article,

“More than just an athlete, Fiegen made the Parkston High School Roll of Excellence all four year of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society.”

    And,

“In addition to her athletic skills, Youngren is an honor roll student and a scholar athlete at Brookings High School.”

My senior year at Harrisburg, we played Parkston in the State Volleyball Championship game. All I know is that Fiegen is a stud. Very, very, very, very good middle. Amazing jumping abilities and athletism.

It should be very clear to any detractors (ahem... USD... ahem) who claimed academics would suffer in the D1 move in fact that our coaches have brought in hundreds of outstanding students to participate in athletics at SDSU. Of course those earlier claims by the Princeton on the Prairie Pretenders and their ilk were baloney, since D1 programs have higher overall graduation rates than D2 programs.

These signings are just more evidence that SDSU has become a stellar example of how academic excellence and on-the-field/court success should go hand-in-hand.
          Holy nutmeg!

Had this forwarded to my attention:

            http://www.postbulletin.com/newsmana...?a=323258&z=22

Look about half way down for:

"Century senior Mary Sanderfoot has accepted a walk-on spot to play volleyball for NCAA Division I South Dakota State University. SDSU was the 2007 Summit League champion.

Sanderfoot is a 6-foot-1 middle blocker. Besides playing for Century, she also played for the Southern Minnesota Volleyball elite club. The SMV team was the highest level of traveling team which was affiliated with the Rochester Youth Volleyball Association."
