  • Remembering Dr. Lawrence O. Fine

    Those who studied or worked in the Agronomy/Plant Science Department between 1946 and 1982 might remember Dr. Larry Fine. Here is a link to his obituary:

    Here is the part which refers to his years of service at South Dakota State University,

    “Larry and family moved to South Dakota State College (now University) at Brookings SD in 1946, where he worked in the Agronomy Department until his retirement in 1982. He taught courses in soil science and conservation, and conducted research in soil chemistry, soil physics, irrigation, fertility, and trace elements in nutrition. He served as Department Head from 1958 to 1969, and ran the water quality laboratory under the Water Resources Institute of South Dakota from 1972 to 1982. During his soil and water research years he published 23 nationally referred research papers and many bulletins and circulars of studies on chemistry and management of soil and water. He served a period of temporary duty at the United States Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, CA in 1956, and did a sabbatical term at Washington State University, Pullman in 1969. During his professional career he guided many graduate students from the U.S. and other nations.”

    Also,

    “The family suggests memorials to be given to the Rapid City Hospice House, the Silver City Volunteer Fire Department, or to the SDSU Foundation for the Dr. Lawrence O. Fine Scholarship at South Dakota State University.”

    Thanks for sharing this WRJ. While I didn't have any classes with Dr. Fine. he was an active member of the bridge club with my parents (Dad was a Chemistry Prof at SDSU 46-80). I alway enjoyed this group, as I helped mom serve the nuts, snacks and drinks through the tables.
