    S.D. universities push to keep up with tech-savvy students' demands

    As wireless Internet becomes more prevalent - among youths and in the working world they eventually will join - the South Dakota Board of Regents is considering ways to bolster the latest Web technology on the state's six public university campuses.

    A wireless laptop system linking the university campuses would aim to keep up with the K-12 system.

    "Kids are using laptops and (are) used to the technology and are coming to universities where we're not using the technology," said Monte Kramer, regents vice president for administrative services. "The board is realizing we have to be reactive and keep up with the K-12 system in the state and graduate students who can teach in K-12 (districts.) ... All of our graduates should be coming out of college with that type of environment."
    Gov. Mike Rounds' Classroom Connection initiative is an example of how K-12 schools are ahead. The program, in its second year, aims to put laptops in every high school student's hands in the state. This fall, 9,600 high school students in 41 districts statewide will have laptops. Teachers are trained by the state to use laptop technology in the classroom.

    Regents Executive Director Tad Perry said a multifaceted initiative is being developed.
    "We continue to explore what it would take to create wireless campus communities and what are the advantages/disadvantages of a laptop environment for the public universities," he said, adding it will take several years to accomplish. . . . (read more)
