SDSU Band Invited To Rose Parade

The South Dakota State University marching band has been invited to perform for a second time at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. The invitation is for New Years Day 2008.

The "Pride of the Dakotas" marching band last appeared in the Rose parade in 2002. At the time, only eight bands from colleges that did not have football teams in the Rose Bowl had ever performed in the Rose parade. This is the first time one of those bands was invited back.

It'll cost an estimated $450,000 to send the 300-member SDSU band to Pasadena.

I'm sure that doesn't take into account what the members will pay, but that will only be a fraction anyway.

The new silver instruments will look nice on that morning!

I interviewed McKinney and asked him about the cost. He said that for a 300-member piece band, the cost would be about $1500 per person. But I'm sure they'll be doing lots of fundraising to lower that cost significantly... I think last time was about 400-450 a member.

I think Peggy's got herself a pet project!

Each Pride member had to raise $650 in 2002 for the first trip to Pasadena after President Miller announced that SDSU would pay for half of the trip costs. If that much can be raised again, each member would likely have to raise about $750 to $800.

Anyone interested in traveling with South Dakota State University’s Pride of the Dakota marching band to the Tournament of Roses parade on Jan. 1 is invited to a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Tompkins Alumni Center on campus.

The band will make its second trip to Pasadena, Calif., being one of few college bands invited to march in the parade twice when their team isn’t playing in the Rose Bowl game.

Four years ago, 300 parents and friends of the band made the trip. . . . (read more)

The Pride should appear on TV between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. tomorrow. Is that right?

                            Re: Pride in Rose Parade

I have a couple of Rose Parade for Dummies questions.

How long is the walk the Pride will be taking today?

Do they get to stop and rest at all along the way?

Do get to get a drink any where along the way?

They are marching 5 and a half miles.

                              No stops at all.
