  • Kansas - Baseball

Hard to believe, I know, but SDSU's 2007 Baseball season opener is this Friday in Lawrence, Kansas. If the weather cooperates I will be in the stands when the Jackrabbits take on the Jayhawks! The Hawks are 5-0 on the young season after they swept Hawaii-Hilo. Here is a link to the Jayhawks baseball site:

Baseball series with Kansas back on the schedule

The South Dakota State University baseball team season-opening series with Kansas is back on the schedule this weekend with a new location and drastically different starting times.

After searching for places to play, coaches from both schools have agreed on a three-game series to be played at The Metrodome in Minneapolis. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, with the series concluding with a single, nine-inning game at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. . . . (read more)

Are they serious? Or is this some kind of prank. This might get us on ESPN or other national news networks. Hopefully we can play well and pick up a win or two.

Up all night: SDSU to play baseball game at 1:30, 3 a.m.

              By By Terry Vandrovec
              Published: February 9, 2007

Putting a twist on the combination of fields and dreams, the South Dakota State University baseball team opened the season with a doubleheader against Kansas at 1:30 a.m. today in the Metrodome. And the teams will meet again Sunday in a single game slated to begin at 3:30 a.m.

“A couple of guys said, ‘I’m pretty good at 1:30 in the morning,’” Jackrabbits coach Reggie Christianson said.

Of course, it’s better late – or is this early? – than never.

SDSU was originally scheduled to play three games in three days at reigning Big 12 champion Kansas (5-0) beginning Friday. But inclement weather and poor field conditions forced a cancellation. When it appeared that the forecast in Lawrence was improving, the two sides discussed the possibility of playing a doubleheader Sunday. That, too, fell through, but Jayhawks coach Rich Price called Christianson on Friday morning and offered the Minneapolis solution. . . . (read more)

KU baseball hits road for impromptu trip

                    The Wichita Eagle

Oh, the lengths that a college baseball coach will go to play games in February.

Kansas will play a three-game morning series this weekend against South Dakota State at Minneapolis' Metrodome. But not just anytime in the morning.

KU was to have begun playing two games today, starting at 1:30 this morning. First pitch for Sunday's game against the Jackrabbits is 3:30 a.m.

All after hurried arrangements had the Jayhawks on the bus Friday afternoon for a 7 ˝-hour drive.

"Oh, you know college kids," KU baseball coach Ritch Price said by cell phone on the ride up I-35. "They'll sleep for three hours on the bus, walk in a major-league ballpark and have the adrenaline pumping.

                    "It's really exciting."

The Jayhawks were scheduled to play three games against South Dakota State in Lawrence this weekend, but cold weather and field conditions canceled those plans Wednesday. . . . (read more)

KU baseball team buses to Minnesota’s Metrodome for overnight twinbill

                    By Ryan Wood

                    Saturday, February 10, 2007

With the weather cold enough to make a penguin shiver, the Metrodome in Minneapolis has become a round-the-clock, climate-controlled baseball operation.

Kansas University knows all too well.

The Jayhawks started a last-minute doubleheader with South Dakota State at 1:30 this morning, one of more than a dozen college games to be played in the downtown Minneapolis indoor venue this weekend.

KU also will play a single game with the Jackrabbits at 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the Metrodome, home of baseball’s Minnesota Twins and the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

The scheduling was done last-minute by KU coach Ritch Price, who heard from a baseball friend that the Metrodome often opens its doors for college games. With the plans made so suddenly, there was no need for an early curfew for the players — the Jayhawks were bussing up to Minneapolis on Friday night and getting to the Metrodome just before the game.

“Our guys are ecstatic to be able to play in a major-league stadium,” Price said Friday night. . . . (read more)

                      Murphy goes 3-for-3 in defeat

Erik Morrison hit a three-run homer Saturday morning against South Dakota State.

                      Feb. 10, 2007

                      MINNEAPOLIS -

Senior Kyle Murphy went 3-for-3 with a triple and junior Erik Morrison hit a three-run homer, but it was not enough as the University of Kansas fell to South Dakota State, 6-5 in the opener of a three-game series at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome early Saturday morning.

KU falls to 5-1 on the season, while the Jackrabbits earn a victory in their first game of the season.

In the second game of the doubleheader, KU leads 3-2 after eight innings. Play had to be suspended because the field needed to be cleared at 7 a.m. Saturday morning. Junior John Allman had just given KU the lead with a two-run single in the eighth.  .  .  .  (read more)

                        Filbert or 89rabbit,

Can we get a baseball category rather than putting it in other sdsu activities? It is the main sport during the spring. It is your call, just a suggestion.

There is an article in todays (2/13/07) Argus recapping the match up with the Jayhawks. There doesn't seem to be a link in the online version but it is in the print version on page C4. Just wanted to pass that along. Some interesting quotes from Reggie in the article.
