  • Utah Valley State at Cadwell Park in Mitchell

Up next for our surging Jackrabbits (14-12 on the year) is a visit by the Wolverines.  As I am sure you recall we took 2 of 3 from them at their place.  Hopefully we can sweep them at Sioux Falls Stadium!  The game will be on the Jackrabbit Baseball Radio network and internet.

Wolverines Host SUU, Travel to South Dakota State
UV sporting 4-2 home record so far this season

    April 9, 2007

    This Week's Action
Utah Valley (11-20) will play six games in six days this week with a three-game series against both Southern Utah and South Dakota State. The Wolverines will host SUU in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4pm and a single game Wednesday at 7pm. Thursday will be a travel day for UV with the SDSU series scheduled for Friday thru Sunday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. First pitch for the three games is scheduled for 2pm, Noon and 11am MT.  .  .  .

    Scouting the Jacks
South Dakota State (14-12) has won five out of six including winning two of three two weeks ago against Utah Valley in Orem. SDSU won the opener 17-3 before holding a late rally to win 10-9 before UV won the finale 10-9. The Jacks lead the all-time series 5-4 over the Wolverines.

South Dakota State swept a two-game series against North Dakota State over the weekend, 6-3 and 10-3.

The Jacks will be back in Orem in May for the Division I Independent Tournament, but the two teams will not play one another. They will face New York Tech, Chicago State, NJIT and Northern Colorado at the tournament.

The SDSU pitching staff has a solid 3.99 ERA and is holding opponents to a .260 batting average.

South Dakota State is its final season as an independent as they will compete in the Mid-Continent Conference beginning on July 1, 2007.   .  .  .  (read more)

Sounds like there is talk of the games possibly moving north to Fargo this weekend to escape a possible blizzard down in the southeastern part of South Dakota.

Weird, yes. The storm is forecasted to hit along I-90 and south of I-90 with it tappering off rapidly as you move north. Right now anywhere from Brookings south is in the target area, with the bulls-eye in Northeastern Nebraska, Northwestern Iowa, and around Union county. Time will tell as it is still 3-4 days out.

The weather forecasters are painting a little more optimistic picture for Mitchell. on Saturday and Sunday, sunny both days with highs of 57 and 61 respectively. Wind is predicted for Sunday.

That's not too bad for spring baseball in SD!

              SDSU baseball coming to Cadwell

              Joel Reinesch The Daily Republic

In the last three weeks, the South Dakota State baseball team has been able to squeeze in just five games.

Head coach Reggie Christiansen was starting to get desperate.

“We needed a place to play,” said Christiansen, whose NCAA Division I Jacks actually play Dakota Wesleyan at Cadwell Park on Tuesday afternoon. “Because I’m pretty good friends with Adam (Neisius) at Dakota Wesleyan, he was nice enough to get us in contact with the people in Mitchell.”

And so it went for Christiansen and the Jacks, who will open a three-day swing at Cadwell Park this afternoon against fellow NCAA Division I Utah Valley State.

Game time for the free-admission, nine-inning game is 3 p.m.

The two teams also will play one, nine-inning game starting at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.

“We have snow on the ground here and Sioux Falls has snow,” said Christiansen, whose team actually is scheduled to play the University of Minnesota in Sioux Falls next week. “Utah Valley State was already going to fly out, so there wasn’t much we could do about the situation.”

So Christiansen called Neisius, who was more than willing to make the connections with Chuck Jones, who oversees the Cadwell Park complex for the City, and the three-game stand was booked.  .  .  .  (read more)

Why am I getting softball on the broadcast when the link says I should be getting baseball?

                      BYU/UVSC roundup 4/14

                      Daily Herald
Mitchell, S.D., -- South Dakota State jumped out to an early four run lead and never looked back to win the series opener over Utah Valley State 10-2 on Friday.

The Wolverines had a chance score first in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Tyler Garretson singled and stole second. But that chance was squandered when the next three batters failed to advance Garretson past second base.

In the bottom of the inning, the Jacks got a bases loaded single from Nick Adams to put the first two runs of the game on the board. Two batters later, Cal Lewis singled to drive in two more runs and push the lead to 4-0.

SDSU eventually pushed the lead to 8-0 before the Wolverines were finally able to get on the board when Austin Heaps doubled home Ryan Jones in the sixth inning. Heaps then came around to score when Josh Hinckley followed him with another double.

The Jacks added single run in the sixth on another Lewis single before the SDSU senior capped his impressive day with a solo home run in the eighth. On the day Lewis finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. . . . (read more)

Wolverines outhit Jacks but can't come up with big hit

                          April 14, 2007

Mitchell, South Dakota - Utah Valley jumped out to an early lead, but South Dakota State scored seven consecutive runs during the middle innings on its way to an 8-4 win over the Wolverines. With the win, SDSU has won the first two of the three-game set with the series finale coming tomorrow at 11am MT.

Jace Brinkerhoff was 2-for-3 on the day and scored twice while Eli Slesk, Derrick Thomas and Keiki Albino also had two hits each. The Wolverines outhit the Jacks 13-11 but stranded nine runners and were thrown out on the basepaths twice.

Nick Adams had three hits and Tim Hanigan had two hits and drove in a pair for SDSU, who have now won four straight games.

It was a pitcher's duel early between UV starter and South Dakota native Dan Christensen and Caleb Thielbar. Neither team could get anything going offensively until the top of the fifth when the Wolverines played small ball to get on the board. . . . (read more)
