  • Rogers assigned to Vermont Lakemonsters

The Vermont Lake Monsters have been a member of the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals baseball system since 1994. Over the past 13 seasons, the Vermont Lake Monsters have compiled a record of 457-529, including a 48-26 record and a New York-Penn League Championship in 1996.

Vermont is the "Class A" short-season affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Vermont's season runs from mid-June until early September with all players on loan from Washington. Because of Vermont's affiliation with Washington, players who play for Vermont one season may not be back for the next season. Only four or five players, on average, will be playing for Vermont in back to back seasons. The drive and determination of these hopeful professionals, can guarantee the competition is fierce night after night.

The mascot of the Vermont Lake Monsters is none other than CHAMP, the lake monster who lives in our very own Lake Champlain. CHAMP was first sighted in 1609 by French Explorer Samuel de Champlain in the lake that bears his name. There have been over 400 sightings of CHAMP since 1609 including a sighting by 58 people in July 1984 during the largest mass sighting of the infamous lake monster (excluding Vermont Lake Monsters games where over 3,300 people see him every home game)! In fact, the famous P.T. Barnum offered $50,000 in 1887 to anyone who could prove his existence (that's a lot of baseball).

So, if affordable entertainment for the entire family with a chance to see the legendary CHAMP sounds appealing, make sure to catch the Vermont Lake Monsters during the summer of 2007! It's more than a game!

I spoke to Jake this evening and he leaves Brookings Thursday headed to Vermont. Vermont season begins on June 19th. Good luck to Jake.
