    Bison report: Getting inside

    After defeating then-No. 8 Marquette, North Dakota State had designs on becoming the first transition team to make the NIT field. An 83-81 home loss to Kansas State likely ended that bid.

    The Bison continue to be competitive with the major-conference teams they've played -- NDSU has taken Texas Tech and Kansas State of the Big 12 to the wire before losing - but cracks are showing.

    NDSU has a serious lack of depth and is down to a seven-player rotation that includes redshirt freshman Austin Pennick and sophomore Lorenzo Riley off the bench. Those two combine to average just three points per game.

    Senior power forward Andre Smith continues to blossom, showing why he was recruited by higher-level schools out of junior college. He's averaging a double-double (18.1 points, 10.6 rebounds) to lead the team in both categories.

    A favorable home schedule for the rest of December (Idaho, a Division II team and an NAIA team) should net the Bison more victories. . . . (read more)
