    Johnson leaving UMKC for junior college

    D[ch8194]ominique Johnson’s fans better get one last good look at him at the Kansas City Pro-Am basketball league.

    Johnson, a 5-foot-10 Lincoln Prep product, has been granted a release from UMKC after one season. Johnson is listed as a rising sophomore on the team’s Web site, but the school released him from his commitment last Monday. He wasted little time finding a new home at the University of Arkansas- Fort Smith, a Division I junior college formerly known as Westark College.

    Johnson departs as new UMKC coach Matt Brown enters. That’s no coincidence.

    “We weren’t clicking,” Johnson said. “We talked about it, and we both agreed on the same thing. We weren’t on the same page.”

    Apparently, Brown set team guidelines back in April. Matters about “school, class attendance and academic requirements” as Brown explained. Neither side was up for full disclosure so it’s a little foggy how the guidelines affected Johnson’s decision.

    “There were some things that he and I didn’t see eye to eye on,” Brown said. “We felt it was best that we go in different directions.”

    As a freshman, Johnson played in all 32 games, averaging 7.3 points and 1.8 rebounds. . . . (read more)
