  • Hey slapnuts

Now that I've got your attention, what can you guys tell me about North Sioux City, and particularly the Dakota Valley school district.  I accepted a job down there and I have some flexibility as to where I can live.  I'd like to live in South Dakota for a couple of reason:

    1a) I wouldn't be living in Iowa :P
    1b) I wouldn't be living in Nebraska :P

    2) A smaller school district-- it's how I was raised and I want my kids to experience something similar.

    So, any thoughts.

Don't really know a lot about the residential situation in Sioux City other than you want to be away from the stockyards/Morrell plant. Having to live near there and smell that on a daily basis would be the worst!

I hear you on not having to live in Iowa! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Elk Point is a decent little town but would leave you with a half hour commute every day!

    Good luck!

        I'll second that 89rabbit!

The golf developement is awesome but I don't know what else is there and what the price level of housing is in the area. Definitely the first place I would look if I had to live down there. If Iowa is paying teachers what they are worth than maybe NDSU_Grad can swing a nice place!!!

I definitely third that.  No state income tax (at least for now).  Easy commute.  You can get SDSU license plates for your vehicles.

Yeah, that's what everybody's been saying. What we'd really like to do is rent for 6-9 months until we get settled and then buy something there. I've been told the north side of Sioux City and the Dakota Dunes area is where you want to be.

Clever ; southeast SD is going to be awash in a storm of yellow and gold to the likes of which has never been seen before.

Houses in the area start at about 160,000. Some of the properties we've looked at online run in the 200,000 range. A little out of our price range right now since my wife isn't working. If she can find a job pretty quick we'd probably look at buying there. I'm not a teacher; I'll be a tech rep for an agribusiness company. My territory will be in NW Iowa.

If you're working in the ag business in that area you better get use to being around SDSU grads! Good luck with everything. Also check out Harrisburg. It might be a little too far to drive but housing is probably more affordable. And, being right next to Sx. Falls means more job opportunities for your wife. If you're really desperate or really bored, you could check out Vermillion and see just how big of a dump that place is.

There's a couple of nice little towns down that way... Jefferson and McCook Lake Come to mind. Also North Sioux City (which is in SD), if you don't mind the casinos.

NDSU_Grad, will you be based out of Sioux City and will you be there everyday? Beresford is right along I-29 halfway between Sioux Falls and Sioux City. Congrats on your new position and best wishes with your family's move to SD.

I'll have a territory consisting of about 16 counties in NW Iowa. Sioux City is about in the middle of the territory if you go North-South. My office will basically be my house so I have some flexibility in where I can live, but don't really want to stray too far from the Sioux City area.
