  • NORTHERN  MEN ’S BASKETBALL NO.1  DII AT

This maybe old news to some and was released in June but worth giving the Wolves their props. Hey I remember in early 80's they drew very well at the old Abreedeen area (fans were right on the floor)

NORTHERN STATE MEN ’S BASKETBALL NO.1 IN NCAA DII HOME ATTENDANCE

INDIANAPOLIS,Ind.- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)has announced the men ’s basketball attendance figures for the 2005-06 season.Northern State University claimed their first Division II attendance crown after just missing the title last year. The Wolves averaged 3,916 over 18 home games. The 70,499 overall fans measured over 20,000 more than any other DII institution while their 3,916 average was nearly 400 more than second place Winston- Salem ’s 3,529.

Northern State has been ranked in the top ten in the nation for attendance the last nine straight years. This marks the seventh time in the last 13 years that the Wolves have been ranked in the top five in the nation in attendance, with second
place finishes coming in 1997-98 and 2004-05. “This proves what Wolves basketball has known for years, that Northern State basketball fans are the best in all of NCAA DII. This gives us a lot to shoot for next season in supporting a young team still in its formative stages.I believe the NCAA Tournament committee will take a long, hard look at Aberdeen to host a national tournament in the future,”commented Northern State Head Men ’s Basketball Coach Don Meyer. Northern State men ’s basketball finished off one of their most successful seasons in the past decade as they posted a 27-6 record after advancing to the NCAA North Central Region Championship game. The 27 wins mark the most for Meyer since coming to NSU in 1999-00 and the most for the program since the 1996-97 season when the Wolves went 30-6.Of the Wolves six losses this season, four were to eventual NCAA DII National Champions of Winona State, who advanced to the Elite Eight after defeating the Wolves 96-86 in the regional finals. The Wolves other two losses were by six points or less.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference finished fourth in the nation in average attendance as they had 1,419 fans per event,up 218 from last season. The North Central Conference led DII with 1,920 fans per event. Northern State University (located in Aberdeen,SD) is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).

From the stats on USD offical page here is the attendance recap:

      ATTENDANCE SUMMARY   GAMES   TOTALS  AVG/GAME
       HOME....................     14    28084 2006
       AWAY....................     10    21411 2141
       NEUTRAL................. 6     544 907
       TOTAL...................     30    54937 1831

So maybe not too far behind, but the SDSU games kind hurt their averages.

        Think that should be 90.7.

Do not know that I would call their averages close to Northern.

          WiJack,

I do not wear red and white. There is nothing more annoying than a jealous USD fan.

I screwed up the tabs from my cut and paste. Yes they played in 6 neutral site and attendence was 544 and average should be 90.1.

I wasnt comparing USD to Northern but rather the school that was in 15th place and had total attendence of 30,000 or so. No USD had a horrible year for attendence. SDSU had more then USD until they got in the NCC games at the Dome. Plus USD represents women and men totals. Most people who show up for the womens games usually stay for the mens and that is why SDSU numbers look worse than they are since going D1 with separate games.

Do not wear red and white, never have never will. Never have made a comment that I might even be close to non SDSU supporter.

Enjoy Badgers (red and white) but SDSU is still my team. Easier to get information now that we are in Div 1.

Look at the numbers. Two hundred and fifty difference between 15th and USD is still a lot on a per game average. You would be up to number 10 for a like comparison. That is a lot bigger than it looks.

I'm sure it has been discussed in other threads, but according to GoJacks.com SDSU Men's team averaged 2,070 at home last year.
