  • Big-time D-I Budgets

We just received the 2005-06 Tennessee Athletics Annual Report. I thought it would be interesting for those on the board with bean-counter tendencies to see the budget numbers for a big-time SEC conference member:

    Thornton Center 1,622,355

    TOTAL EXPENDITURES 66,165,791
    NET SURPLUS (DEFICIT) 3,757,128
    (The totals are accurate . . . I don't guarantee that I didn't mis-type any of the individual values.)

That's what the financials look like from the top of the mountain. We're beginning the climb, at about $7.4 million last fiscal year. Some of the folks in the Athletic Department I've talked to have said their hope is that we'll develop into a Colorado State-type program ($18 million budget in 2005-06.) That's probably a good 10-20 year goal.

The budget would be great.  But I suppose it depends how you look at it.  Currently Colorado State University is the least funded school and has the smallest athletic staff in the Mountain West Conference.  I hope we strive to have a athletic budget that is on top of our conference affiliation Mid-Con and Great West (Gateway).

I guess if folks want to see the Colorado State comparison as a negative then they're free to do so.

I see it as a goal to work toward--considering where we are today, I think it's high enough for now. I suppose we could have picked out Iowa State or Kansas State, or Tennessee as goals instead, but one thing about goals is that they have to be achievable.

Personally, I think a $20 million annual budget for SDSU athletics in ten years' time would be both a remarkable fundraising success as well as utterly necessary to make SDSU athletics be the success we all want it to be.

Maybe that goal is too low. We shall see.

CSU is a I-A program. If SDSU has a budget like theirs, yet not have the 22 extra football scholarships, I don't see that as a bad thing.

Is there a link to mid-con, gwfc, and gateway budgets? I would think an $18 million budget would be a good one in those conferences.
