  • Royal River Casino Law suit

In this morning's Argus there is an article about a law suit that the Sioux Santee tribe has filed against the state of South Dakota which contends that the state is restricting economic development by limiting the number of gambling devises at their casino. Governor Rounds has asserted that by not negiotating, he is following the SD constitution. I can't help but think that since there is a portion of the SD budget that is predicated on revenue from the South Dakota Lottery, that having competition from the tribes is an issue here. I know for a fact that Royal River Casino is drawing bus loads of people from Fargo, more so from seniors who just want a chance to get out of the state and have little fun with the penny slots. Those who frequent Royal River have no doubt noticed buses from other places as well so, in that sense we have something new to South Dakota, namely people coming in for entertainment rather than South Dakotan's leaving for out state for entertainment such as a Twins game.

This issue is of interest to me , when you consider that gambling and gaming opportunities were unheard of 40-50 years ago only maybe a blackjack table in the back room of the Legion club which no was suppose to know about. Its about morality and taxes. Times have changed greatly and its hard to judge what is going on nowdays.
