View Full Version : How the team looks

I was looking over the Pre-Season Two-Deep and some of the things that jumped out at me.
O-line - looks good (nice size), lacking a little exp. a guard. Michael Suhn moving to left side and Whiston Kaleimamahu stepping up to start. He looked better as the season went on, as I recall. Should be ok.
Wide-outs - look strong.
TE - looks a little scary to me with a So, and RS Fr. slated 1, 2, and Ryan Lowry bringing up the rear.
Obviously the big question is at QB - Brad Nelson the Jr. back up or Andy Kardoes the RS Fr. I hate to go into the season with a RS Fr. but if it is close I go with the young guy.
RB - is another big question mark. Everyone seems to by high on Anthony Watson and I am looking forward to seeing him play. Looks like James O'Neill will be the big back at 6' 1" 240 lbs. Another interesting kid is Donnie Parsons he is only 5'6" and 160 lbs, might be fun to watch if he dosen't get killed.
D-Line - looked ok, a bit undersized, hope they are fast.
LB - scares me Marty Kranz RS Fr. from Watertown, Chris Coauette returning to his spot and it looks like Rodney Francois (although reading his bio it also looks like he may get a look at SS). Hopefully they come together as a unit.
CB - We are loaded- Kevin Brown is back and we have 4 other guys trying to get the starting nod, including 2 Jr. College Transfers from CA. . .Tyran Slaughter from LA, and Freddie Ellis from San Diego.
SS & TS - Both starters are back (and BIG), should be ok.
Looks like if we can get the BIG two (QB & RB) on track early we could do something this season. Those of course are big ifs. Here is to our Jackrabbits, lets hope we go out of D II with style and a NCC Championship!
Go Blue!

Here is what the Argus thinks of us this year:
http://www.argusleader.com/kickoff2003/Fridayarticle16.shtml
All and all not to bad, however if Augie went 4-4 last year in the NCC and finished in a 4 way 4th place tie (thats a lot of 4s) with the UNC forfeits, how come they said we finished 5th with a 4-4 NCC record? ???

James Oneil
I am a little confused here on what Oneil's status is in terms of playing. Chris Solari implies he no longer playing due to injury. I have seen where he was playing baseball all summer long with the Brookings Cubs so apparently he was healthy all summer. Unless sometime happen in the past two weeks, I was under the impression that he would be the leading RB. Again if Anthony Watson came on strong and edged him out thats okay too.
Oneil impressed me last year until he got hurt real bad in the Western Washington game.
If you read the USF write up two SDSU players transferred to USF. Derek Degest and Jake Erickson both transferred.

Derek Degest got a lot of playing time last year. He was a good player from Harrisburg. He was the big star in the 11A championship game a couble of years back between Harrisburg and Gregory and was among the Elete 45 picked by the Argus. Apparently he has not progressed that much at SDSU.
I suspect both felt they were not going to progress to a starter, and that is why they left.

I believe there will continue to be players leaving the program based on our new path to D1AA and if they feel sufficient playing time will not be there. I noticed on the jack football website where they position this weeks game they are stating that Anthony Watson is the starter and they have no other experienced running backs other than a Los Angeles transfer Anthony Robinson who I don't even see on the roster. They compare Watson's running style and body type type to Josh Ranek including his number #30.

I see what you mean, Robinson must have just come on board campus, perhaps after the media guide was printed. *Hey we need new blood. *I regret that Oneil is already injured. *Its a shame as he is a good athlete, maybe better at baseball than football.
*If Waton can emulate Ranek, go for it. *I like guys who do not give up at running back. *Ranek is getting a lot attention in the CFL and they are beginning to see his talent. *With a tough running back, the offense can be more balanced.

It took me a while too, but you have to click on "latest News" on Varsity Sports Football. There is an Adobe file 09-02-03 that has the mention of Robinson and the line ups for Saturdays' game.

I said it at the top of this thread, if it is close go with Kardoes. Nothing against Nelson, but if we are going to start someone with little to know College game day exp. lets go with the kid we will have around longer. *Unless we think we have the inside track on some stud still in High School. **Either way lets get a win!

So many reasons to be optimistic about the rest of the year. Offense and Defense played great tonight. Lots of individuals that can take this team a long ways this season. Sounded like a big crowd, I didnt hear the attendence announced, I'm sure someone will weigh in that went to the game.

I would would like to begin formal talks to replace the Argus Liar with the St. Joe. paper. They did a much better job covering this football game, and last March when our womens team won the national championship they did a 10X better job of reporting that event....

I am with you there. I just got my Friday edition of the Brookings Register. Guess what is front page news?
Two or three legislators are going to oppose the Division 1 move. Frank Klocecek Democrap from Scotland and Clarence Kooistra from Garretson, Repungent republican and from Clear Lake Tim Begalka. These guys are all going to get a letter from me and I am going to tell them to work harder for more state higher education money and not worry about the athletic department that is 73 per cent financed by private funds.
Great win, Jackrabbits! You did the conference proud.
I listened to the second half of the game on WNAX and that goal line stand was outstanding. Your fans sounded great over the radio too.

The only thing that bothers me about the game and that is despite the four quarter stand and the shut out, NWMSU stlll ended up with 329 total offense, it a number I would like to see be lower. Dont think the Jack Fans are worried about that SEPT 27 date in Fargo. I know I am and hope for the best team to win.

If the Jacks take care of Winona, they should definitely be in the polls. Of course, the regional polls are the only ones that matter.

Jackrabbits Down Western Oregon
Football team bounces back after tragedy with 37-10 win over Wolves
By Adam Zobel
Coach John Stiegelmeier and his Jackrabbit football team had a situation that last week no one would ever want to face. Coming off a hard-fought loss to Winona State, the Jacks were stunned by the sudden death of teammate Donnie Parsons and faced a long trip to the West Coast to face an unfamiliar opponent.
A week such as last week often defines a football team as SDSU could either rise to the challenge against the undefeated Wolves with a strong showing or wilt from their stresses.
The Jackrabbits were up to the task on Saturday as they convincingly defeated Western Oregon 37-10 at McArthur Field in Monmouth, Oregon.
The defense allowed the Wolves to score 10 points in the second quarter, but placed its imprint on the game as John Perry returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown on the last play of the first half. SDSU limited the home team to 290 total yards, compared to 532 for the Jackrabbits.
Quarterback Brad Nelson came out like a slinger for the third straight week as he threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns for the Yellow and Blue. Nelson opened the scoring for the Jacks as he threw to Solomon Johnson for a 76-yard touchdown. He later added scoring tosses to receivers Jeff Hesse and Josh Davis. Johnson led all receivers with 144 yards on four catches.
Running back Anthony Watson continued to solidify his status as the Jacks' top newcomer of the year as he ran for 138 yards on 18 carries with a 59-yard touchdown scamper. The redshirt freshman also had three catches for 38 yards to complement his 7.7 yard-per-carry average.
Penalties continue to be a concern for the Jacks as they committed 12 infractions that cost them 110 yards. An early SDSU drive had reached the eight-yard line before mistakes pushed the offense out of field goal position. Special teams play also was a hindrance as they missed an extra point and two field goals with another field goal attempt being blocked.
The Jacks travel up to Fargo next Saturday to face North Dakota State in the North Central Conference opener for both teams. The Bison are 2-1 after losing to Division I-AA Cal-Davis on September 13. NDSU defeated Div. I-AA power Montana earlier this season. Kickoff at the FargoDome is at 7 p.m.

Here is the Register story on the NDSU game. I was begining to think they had forgotten about SDSU football. One thing I will say is Coach Stig is a horrible interview and he proves it again in this article. He makes me cringe when he does one live on WNAX. I have no idea what he is like to talk to one on one. If he comes across the same way, I can only hope he has a small role in recruiting. It is like night and day the differnece between Coach Stig and Coach Nagy. Anyway here is the article:

I'm glad he think it was a fun game. It sure wasn't much fun to watch. Coach Stig has got to go. Bring on someone that has some D1 experience like BOHL brought to NDSU. Our performance was embarrasing.
