  • RANEK IS STARTING TO BREAK OUT IN THE CFL

I have been checking in on a CFL board to see how Josh Ranek is doing in the CFL. He has scored a couple of TD's this season, both on short passes. Ranek iss also getting the right kind of blocking and racked up 79 yards on 14 carries in a loss to Edmenton.  This was probably his best rushing game so far in his short career. Ottawa is second to last in the East division with a 2-5 record.

Here is the link to the game story.

Josh is starting to do for Ottawa what he did for SDSU
    See below.

    Aug 8

    Ottawa 29, Saskatchewan 24

OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Josh Ranek scored on a 24-yard run with 78 seconds remaining as the Ottawa Renegades snapped a three-game losing streak with a 29-24 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The struggling Renegades squandered an early 11-point lead before erasing a 24-16 deficit in the fourth quarter against one of the CFL's most surprising teams.

Backup quarterback Romario Miller caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from wide reciever Sherrod Gideon with 10:38 remaining, pulling the Renegades within 24-22.

Ranek scored in a more conventional way with his run with just over a minute remaining, putting Ottawa ahead for good.

Linebacker Kelly Wiltshire preserved the victory when he intercepted Nealon Greene at the goal line in the waning seconds.

Greene's lone touchdown pass, a 39-yard connection with Matt Dominiquez with 9:13 left in the third quarter, gave the Roughriders a 21-14 lead.

Kenton Keith scored on a one-yard run and Terrence Melton returned a fumble one yard for another TD for the Roughriders (5-3), who had a three-game winning streak stopped and fell into a first-place tie with Winnipeg in the West Division.

Re: RANEK IS STARTING TO BREAK OUT IN THE CFL

Here is another update on Ranek. Ottawa lost, but not without a fighting effort. Our guy Ranek had a part in it all. Josh had one TD on a 8 yard run and total rushing was 84 yards. Getting clloser to the 100 mark per game.

Bombers vault into first with victory
      Winnipeg 34, Ottawa 29
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Ticker) -- For the second time this season, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers had just enough to hold off the Ottawa Renegades.

Khari Jones passed for one touchdown and ran for another score as the Blue Bombers moved into first place in the West Division with a 34-29 victory over the Renegades.

In the first meeting between the teams on June 27, the Blue Bombers built a 15-point lead before holding on for a 34-32 victory.

It looked like the Blue Bombers would have a much easier time after Jones connected with Robert Gordon on a 25-yard touchdown pass with under two minutes left in the third quarter for a 30-13 lead. Jones also ran 10 yards for a TD in the first quarter.

Jones passed for 257 yards as the Blue Bombers (6-3) moved one-half game ahead of B.C., Edmonton and Saskatchewan.

Troy Westwood extended the lead with a 44-yard single early in the fourth before the Renegades nearly rallied.

Josh Ranek and quarterback Kerry Joseph ran for touchdowns around a 46-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes, pulling Ottawa within 31-29 with 2:27 remaining.

Following Joseph's TD, the Renegades went for a two-point conversion to tie the game but failed when Joseph threw an incompletion.

Joseph completed 19-of-37 passes for 274 yards and two interceptions for the Renegades (3-6), who lost for the fourth time in five games.

Re: RANEK IS STARTING TO BREAK OUT IN THE CFL

Ranek is probably not making much more than 35k per year. I sure he would like to get back in the NFL. Timmerman and Vinitari got to be getting more than a million per year now. So Ranek is playing for peanuts.

Your father may remember a guy named Garney Henley, who spent one week at SDSU in 1956 or 57, and then transferred to Huron University.  Garney was from Hayti and played in the Class B basketball tournament when he was a freshmen. His coach was Jim Marking at Hayti now, Hamlin High.

Garney  broke a ton of NAIA records at Huron. Garney played for Toronto of the CFL and he never got rich. I  believe Henley broke a ton of CFL records too, and is still in Toronto. He never got a shot at the NFL. If he did he turned them down as he kind of adapted to Canada and staight up their.

I have a ton of admiration for Josh though. A tough kid who never gives up. I think he would make a good running backs coach somewhere.

Although Ottawa lost on Aug 17, Ranek had his first 100 yard game in ground rushing. Also at the Ottawa homepage site they had a poll for fans to repsond on which player does not get respect on the Ottawa team. Fifty three of the responses were for Josh Ranek.

Renegades 41 at Saskatchewan Roughriders 51

Renegades lose shootout on the Prairie

            By RENEGADES COMMUNICATIONS

REGINA - What began as a promising afternoon for the Ottawa Renegades ended as yet another tough and disappointing loss.

Despite scoring a team record 41 points in one game (including 21 in the first quarter), the Renegades (3-7-0) ended up allowing 51 points to the Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-3-0) on Sunday at Taylor Field.

Leading 21-8 after the opening quarter and 25-16 at halftime, the Renegades were in position to score a second win over the Roughriders this month.

But Saskatchewan took control in the third quarter, scoring a whopping 28 points, the greatest amount of points allowed by a Renegades team in one quarter.

The damage began on the kickoff to begin the second half when Kevin Nickerson returned the ball 96 yards for a touchdown.

            From there, Saskatchewan took control.

Kenton Keith scored on a 33-yard run to give Saskatchewan a 30-26 advantage, its first lead of the game.

Corey Holmes, back in the line-up for the Roughriders, followed with an 87-yard punt return touchdown.

And on the final play of the third, Roughriders running back Chris Szarka dove in from the one-yard line on a third-down gamble to give Saskatchewan a 44-26 lead.

Keith added another touchdown early in the fourth to give Saskatchewan a 25-point lead.

The Renegades added late touchdowns by Josh Ranek on a 19-yard run and Sherrod Gideon on a 50-yard reception from quarterback Romaro Miller who played most of the fourth quarter in place of starting quarterback Kerry Joseph.

The Renegades allowed touchdowns on offence, special teams and defence for the first time in franchise history. Saskatchewan got an interception return touchdown from Jackie Mitchell who stepped in front of a Joseph pass and ran for 51 yards for a major.

Ottawa built an early lead using a strong running game featuring Ranek.

Joseph scored the first two touchdowns on one-yard plunges. He later hooked up with D.J. Flick on a 37-yard catch-and-run play on the final play of the first quarter.

The loss overshadowed fine efforts by some Renegades.

Ranek continued to run the ball well, finishing with 123 yards on 18 carries. It was his second 100-yard game of his Renegades and CFL career.

On defence, defensive lineman Keaton Cromartie played one of his finest games in a Renegades uniform, recording four tackles and three sacks, the first time any player has managed three sacks in any game involving the Renegades.

Jerome Haywood and Roger Dunbrack also had sacks for Ottawa.

The loss was the second straight for the Renegades who return to Ottawa from a Prairie road trip on Monday.

The team does not play its next game until Friday, August 29 at home against the Montreal Alouettes. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The 92 points by both teams sets a Renegades franchise record scored by both teams in one game ... Receiver Demetris Bendross suffered bruised ribs on a punt return late in the fourth quarter but should be ready for the game against Montreal ... Bendross was the target of abuse from Saskatchewan fans the entire game. Bendross, who left Saskatchewan last season, was derided by Roughriders fans every time he touched the ball ... Saskatchewan mascot Gainer the Gopher nearly began a riot when he dragged the effigy of a Renegades player in front of the Ottawa defensive line during a break in the fourth quarter ... Attendance on a hot (30 C) and windy day at Taylor Field was 26,772 ... Receiver D.J. Flick led the Renegades with eight catches for 107 yards. The eight catches matches a team record set by Jimmy Oliver last October against Montreal ... Saskatchewan did not commit one turnover during Sunday's game ... The Roughriders had 368 return yards, while Ottawa managed 227.

Ranek is now the featured back up in Ottawa.  He had back to back 100 + yard games, which is hard to do in the pass happy, 3 down CFL.  As a matter of fact he is the first player to do it in Ottawa history.  If he keeps this up, who knows maybe we could see him in the NFL.  Here is the story from the Brookings Register:

Do the Dallas Cowboys own the rights to Ranek ? I thought they signed him to a contract last year. That is probably long gone after this much time. I would love to see Josh in the NFL somewhere and at the rate he is going it might happen. I really hope its not in a Cowboy uniform!

Looks like Josh is having a very good year considering he was not the featured back at the start of the Season for a poor team.

                      From the Argus Leader:

Ranek is 5th in CFL in rushing

FOOTBALL: Ottawa's Josh Ranek, a former South Dakota State and Bon Homme High standout, is fifth in the Canadian Football League in rushing. Ranek has rushed for 701 yards, averaging 6.7 yards a carry. He also has caught 25 passes for 258 yards. He has scored 10 touchdowns. Ottawa is 5-9.

Here are some of the offensive records for the Renegades as well as an article about Josh. I use to work with his mom at the clinic in Tyndall, S.D. She is a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practioner. Ranek has done well for himself and SDSU.

                            Josh Ranek

                            Team: Ottawa Renegades
                            Number/Position: #30 / RB
Date of Birth: May 11, 1978

Take any player from any team in the Canadian Football League and ask them if they ever wanted to be the "Go to Guy". Odds are that at least 9 out of 10 would offer a resounding "yes" to the question. And there is one player in Ottawa that would not only offer an affirmative, but, more importantly IS living the role. Josh Ranek could be called the Renegades' Man for All Seasons in 2003. He does it all. And very well to boot. Heading into the last weekend of the regular season Ranek led 3 of the 6 offensive categories that he was eligible for. He was second in 2 of the other 3. But it is exactly the way Ranek would want it. "I think every skilled player in the offence wants the ball as much as possible", Ranek offered recently. "If you don't, you probably shouldn't be playing football. It is a good feeling getting your number called because it tells you that the coach has confidence in you. It also gives you the chance to make a play and help the team win."

Team play is what Ranek is all about. How many other first-string running backs would be so quick to offer their services on the kick return? Ranek's 1,960 All-Purpose yards provides the answer to that one. He also has 40 pass receptions to go along with his 1,068 rushing yards. Not only does Josh offer an all-purpose attitude, he also has a high level of expectation and feels the best is ahead. "We are definitely heading in the right direction," he continued. "I think we fell a little short of our expectations this season. We lost a couple of close games that, had we won, would have put us in a better situation in the playoff picture."

The need to excel has been a big part of the Renegades' season this year and the expectations to step up even more will be evident heading into the 2004 season. With Ottawa playing host to the Grey Cup in 2004 a whole different set of needs are tacked on to the ones already there. And Ranek is aware of that. "If we reach the post-season this year, anything less than a Grey Cup appearance would be disappointing. For the 2004 season, the post-season is our top goal. I feel we are no longer an expansion team and we need to impose that attitude on the other teams in the CFL."

And speaking of imposing an attitude, Ranek will have plenty of time to gear up for the 2004 season. He will also have a chance to focus on his goals for the regular-season and prep for the run to the 92nd Grey Cup. The last time an Ottawa-based club played in the Grey Cup was 1981, and the last time they won was in 1976. Ranek understands the importance of a visit to the National Final. "My goal every off-season is to improve as an athlete, both physically and mentally. Ottawa hosts the Grey Cup next year, so we will have extra incentive as a team. What a great experience it would be for our fans to have their team playing for the Cup."

                            Great for the fans, indeed.
