He recently pledged $4 million to help overhaul the aging football stadium at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he spent his first two years of college and was a drum major in the school's marching band. "It's the stadium where I performed in 1941," he said of his decision to underwrite the improvements.

$4 million donated to upgrade Poly stadium

Alex and Faye Spanos contribute to first phase, which will cost $13 million and add seats, memorial

CAL POLY - A $4 million donation to be announced today will help Cal Poly add thousands of seats and eight skyboxes to Mustang Stadium.

San Diego Chargers owner Alex Spanos and his wife, Faye, pledged the funds to help renovate the stadium, where he and his brother, Danny, performed in 1941 as drum majors with the marching band.

Cal Poly officials say the 70-year-old stadium is in need of significant repair and that it could use more seating for graduation ceremonies and some football games. The renovation/expansion project also means the university would no longer have the smallest stadium in the Great West Football Conference.

The $13 million first phase includes new seating on the west side of the stadium that would increase capacity to 10,000 from about 8,000 currently. The project would move the home side of the field from east to west. . . .

Looking at the Cal-Poly fan board sounds like their stadium currently has a permanent structure on one side and metal bleachers like ours on the other. Once we have our scholarships endowed we need to do something like this at Coughlin. Of course it shouldn't cost as much since we are not in California.

I wonder if any one else on this board remembers the plane crash of 1960. I was living in in suburban LA at the time and it was big news in California and hard on the program with everyone on the team lost in the crash. I think its a noble act that they are dedicating the new part of the staduim to this team.
