  • Southern gets back on track

The Jaguars win a wild one. SU 42 - Alabama St. 41. Huge win for them many thought that Alabama St. was the best in the SWAC. Nice bounce back!

Wild SU comeback gives Richardson milestone win

      By JOSEPH SCHIEFELBEIN

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Wow, what a way to get win No. 100.
Thomas Ricks' 31-yard touchdown throw to Emile Bryant, plus Breck Ackley's PAT, with 2 seconds remaining lifted Southern to a crucial Southwestern Athletic Conference win, 42-41 over Alabama State on Saturday night in the Cramton Bowl.

The Jaguars (3-2, 2-0 SWAC), who scored on their first and last offensive plays of the game, overcame a 20-point deficit with three touchdowns in the final 13 minutes. That comeback came against big odds:

Southern played without tailback Gerald Holmes, who has a bruised right calf and never played.

The Jaguars defense, which gave up a season-worst 475 yards and 41 points had to dig in to stave off Alabama State, which went nowhere after starting a possession at the SU 33-yard line midway through the fourth.

And Ricks had to return after getting knocked out on a Southern drive that ended up stalling at the ASU 26-yard line with fewer than two minutes left.
"It's nice (to get to 100)," said Richardson, now 100-36 at Southern and 142-48-1 overall. The players also presented Richardson with the game ball in the locker room.

        Southern rallies by Hornets

The Alabama State players talked about revenge this week.

They talked about how long they waited for another shot at Southern University after two losses to the Jaguars last year.

        They wanted this one.

For three quarters, the Hornets had it firmly in their grasp.

But the fourth quarter of Saturday's game will be as hard for ASU to forget as last year's Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game. Southern rattled off 21 unanswered points, including a 31-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Ricks to Emile Bryant with two seconds to play, to knock off the Hornets 42-41.
