Big Sky call may change SDSU's plan

South Dakota State is on cruise control with a plan to add four scholarships per year to its football program. One call from the Big Sky Conference, however, could force the Jacks to put the pedal to the metal.
The Big Sky mandates each school fund at least 60 scholarships. Big Sky commissioner Doug Fullerton said last week new members would be given approximately three years to get to that level, which is just short of the Division I-AA maximum of 63.
SDSU's plan also includes contingency plans on conference membership, said athletic director Fred Oien.
"We have a commitment to fulfill full membership in any conference at their request," Oien said. "Everybody has plans out there and we are certainly prepared to do that."
SDSU is at 38 scholarships this year, up just two from the NCAA Division II maximum of 36. It's taking the four-per-year pace because of Title IX issues mandated by the state. . . .
