  • SDSU vs UNC game thread

Two inches of snow shoveled off the field. Two to four inches predicted today. How will that affect the game?

Stick to the ground game. UNC has a poor defense at best. Need to get in the endzone right now.

I guess the passing game will work too. I would like to see more rushing attempts from here out but what do I know, really.

Nice drive, nice result, Jacks lead 7-0. 1st quarter winding down.

Why don't we run the ball? Did I miss something? Is Watson hurt, some O-lineman missing? Defense is going to start getting tired. We need another score before the half, first lets get a stop.

Running the ball... what a concept. Best back in the GWFC scores our 2nd TD, 14-0 Jacks. Lets cover this kick, get a stop, and go into the locker room up 2 scores.

Half-back pass from Watson to Nelson for an apparent TD called back after offensive interference called on Nelson.  Still think we should use Watson to RUN THE BALL.

Despite a shaky offensive performance, less than ideal play calling, 2 blocked kicks, several bad penalties etc.. we will have a lead at the half, should have been more. Can I say it one more time, I would like us to run the ball more.

UNC's defense is bad, but their pass defense has allowed more td's than anyone in the GWFC and almost as many yards per game. Plus it being nelson's last game, solo's, janeceks last game i would think the coaches would want them to go out on a high note.

3rd interception by Nelson.  Either he or penalties on us (15 for 150 yars) are UNC's best offense. Fortunately, they are inept in all other ways on offense.  UNC has the ball inside the 20.  We really need a stop here or things are going to get dicey.

Prevent defense doesn't and now we need to cover up the onside kick. They have no TO's.

UNC player touches the kick early, we get the ball and can win the game by taking a knee a couple of times.  Another scoreless 2nd half for our offense and another stellar performance by our D right up until the last drive.  Nice end to a great first season at the DI level.

                        Staff Reports

                        published: 11/20/2004

                        SDSU (5-5, 1-3) at No. Colorado (2-8, 2-2)

                        WHEN: 1 p.m. today

                        WHERE: Nottingham Field, Greeley, Colo.

                        RADIO: WNAX-AM 570

                        SERIES: UNC leads 18-13.

COACHES: SDSU, John Stiegelmeier (8th year, 47-38 ); UNC, O. Kay Dalton (5th season, 34-23).

RANKINGS: Neither team is ranked, although SDSU owns wins over two ranked teams NDSU (No. 24) and Southern (No. 20).

LAST WEEK: SDSU fell at Southern Utah in double overtime 23-17. UNC lost 31-9 to Cal Poly, which claimed the Greatest Conference championship with the victory.

ABOUT SDSU: The Jackrabbits will finish their first season in Division I-AA with a winning record if they can beat former North Central Conference rival Northern Colorado.

This is the last game in QB Brad Nelson's short but storied career. The senior from Winona, Minn., is looking to add to his school-record 46 career touchdowns. He has 5,187 yards passing and needs just 175 today to move into second place on SDSU's all-time list.

Nelson will be looking toward a pair of senior WRs, Solomon Johnson and Brian Janecek, who have helped him set those lofty records. Janecek became Nelson's primary target when junior Josh Davis went down with a knee injury, with the Freeport, Ill., native upping his season totals to a team-high 676 yards and 48 catches with six TDs.

Davis, now healthy, became the SDSU leader in career catches last week in the overtime loss at Southern Utah.

Sophomore RB Anthony Watson needs just 5 yards to become SDSU's 15th 1,000-yard rusher. Look for him to hit that mark behind the concerted and intertwined efforts of an offensive line that is led by seniors Jeff Davis and Tom Higbee.  .  .  .

ABOUT UNC: Expect the Bears to go to Vincent Jackson early and often in his final game. The 6-6 senior WR, who is highly regarded among NFL scouts, leads the team with 1,301 yards receiving and 10 TDs. He leads the Great West in receiving yards, receptions per game and all-purpose yardage.

He's complimented by RB Andrew Wilson, who has 918 yards on the ground.

UNC's defense should provide SDSU with a staunch test. The Jackrabbit coaches say the Bears' win-loss record doesn't match how well they've played.

The Bears are 52-8 all-time at Nottingham Field, but they have lost twice there this season.

                        - Chris Solari

Congrats on a good season.  A winning record is something, considering it was our first season in I-AA and we had so many road games.  Good luck in the recruiting wars.

                        Go State!  ;D

South Dakota State Ruins Senior Day With 14-7 Win on Cold and Snowy Day at Nottingham Field

Jacks win in Greeley for first time since 1992 as Bears finish season 2-9 overall.

                              Nov. 20, 2004

GREELEY, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado football team was limited by both the South Dakota State defense and the blistering cold and snowy conditions at Nottingham Field on Senior Day as the Bears fell 14-7 in their season finale on Saturday afternoon.

UNC (2-9, 2-3 Great West) was limited to only 59 net yards until their last possession of the game. On that possession, junior quarterback Nick Hager completed three straight passes to senior All-American Vincent Jackson for 50 total yards to put the Bears into scoring territory. A Hager to Jamar Farbes pass put Northern Colorado in the red zone and Hager then found Jackson on an 18-yard touchdown pass to cut the SDSU (6-5, 2-3) lead to 14-7 with 1:17 left.

With no timeouts left, that set up an onsides kick attempt for UNC that appeared to be successful at first as junior Reed Doughty recovered the Justin Zaitz kick. But the officials ruled the ball did not travel 10 yards, awarded possession to the Jacks and then SDSU ran out the clock to end the game.

The Jackrabbits rolled up 275 yards of total offense on the afternoon and struck first when Dusty Snyders caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Brad Nelson with 47 seconds left in the first quarter.

SDSU went ahead 14-0 on a two-yard touchdown run by Anthony Watson at the 5:20 mark of the second quarter.

The Walter Payton Award candidate Jackson, who had only two catches for 13 yards before the final drive, finished the game with six receptions for 81 yards and the touchdown. He ended the season with 80 catches, setting the UNC single-season record. For his magnificent career, he ended up with 177 catches for 3,548 yards, 37 touchdowns and 5,810 all-purpose yards.

Hager finished the afternoon 11-25 for 121 yards in relief of starter Tony Christensen who was 2-8 for 13 yards and was sacked four times due to limited mobility from a lingering injury.

SDSU's Watson led all rushers, gaining 93 yards on the ground while Nelson passed for 195 yards on 15-31 passes. He was picked off twice. SDSU punter Neal Bainbridge may have well been the player of the game, punting eight times for 359 total yards (a 44.9 average), including a long of 67 yards.

Defensively, Charlie Barrett was credited with 13 tackles while Doughty, Thomas Smith and Ryan Palmer each had nine. SDSU's Chris Coauette had 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two interceptions.

The win for the Jacks was the first in Greeley since the 1992 season; the win snapped a five-game losing streak at Nottingham Field.

The snowy and cold conditions kept the crowd small for the final home game of the 2004 season. The temperature at kickoff was only 30 degrees.
