I-AA West: The Great West Conference, Not Shying Away from Competition

    Kent Schmidt, I-AA Western Columnist

The Great West Football Conference may be just a little over a year old but it is certainly starting to make a name for itself. Last year, the conference members recorded victories over I-AA titans McNeese State (by Southern Utah), Northwestern State (by North Dakota State), Montana State (by Cal Poly), and Southern University (by South Dakota State).

The new I-AA conference began play last fall after being officially assembled in February of 2004. The conference currently is made up of six squads, spanning five western states. The six members include Cal Poly, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, and UC Davis. Cal Poly and Southern Utah are the conferences’ only two playoff eligible schools. The remaining four are in midst of their transition from Division II to I-AA.

That out-of-conference scheduling and wins by its members gained the Great West the second best GPI rating by I-AA.org (just behind the Atlantic 10) last year. The conference also had two teams that finished 2004 in most Top 25 polls in Cal Poly and North Dakota State. In fact, Cal Poly was the inaugural conference champion and just missed the I-AA playoffs after posting an overall 9-2 record. . . .
