South All-Stars rally for 24-16 football victory

    By Deb Smith

    American News Sports Writer

The South All-Star football team can hold the bragging rights to the Clark Swisher Activities Complex for about one month.

The South came from behind to beat the North by a score of 24-16 on Thursday in the first game ever played at the new facility next to Aberdeen Central High School. The next football action in the partially-completed facility is the Hub City Bowl on Aug. 27 when Aberdeen Roncalli, Aberdeen Central and Northern State will play consecutive games.

"This was huge," said South player Jordan Paula of Brookings. "It means a lot to the South team. This is our field now. It was a good win."

After the North team scored its second touchdown of the game to take a 13-0 lead in the second quarter, Paula needed just one play to get the South on the scoreboard. Paula ran 80 yards for a touchdown to get his team back in the game.

"It was supposed to be a run inside but I cut it up the field and found an open lane on a diagonal run. It's a great way to end my senior year," Paula said.

"This was a good hard-hitting game," Culver said. "I had a blast. The weather was great. The football was great. This is how football should be played."

While North coach Joel Hybertson of Rapid City Stevens acknowledged that the opening drive of the second half was big, he thought the game started turning on Paula's 80-yard burst.

"What we looked at as a key play was the 80-yard run," he said. "It deflated us emotionally."

[glb]Average of 30 yards per carry. They probably should have found a way to put the ball in Jordan's hands more than 3 times?  Great job![/glb]

I am just curious here.  Who is Chris Moran? He played for the North. With it being an all star game, its understandable that coaches would let each running back have about an equal number of carries which according to the stats is about 3. Note that Jordan Paula had  3 carries for 90 yards. Chris Moran had 16 and netted 64 years.  That is a bit skewed but he apparently did most of the work for the North. Also it appears the South may have dominated the O line.  None-the-less, Jordan did what he has shown for BHS this past year and hopefully will continue to for SDSU. He needs good blocking to out front and to make these long runs. ;D. He will be an exciting one to watch.

I believe Chris Moran is a Jackrabbitt wrestling recruit.
