Just wondering if anyone has heard about anyone the Jacks are recruiting for next year. I would think we would have an excellent chance at recruiting some excellent athletes.

    Go Jacks !!!!!

Travis Rhone 5'11 171 Running Back Cedar Rapids,IA Washington
    Keith Badger 6'2 190 Quarterback Cottage Grove,MN

We clearly need depth at running back. The above are players the Jacks have been in touch with.

How good is Christie from Pierre? Scored 2 long touchdown runs against Brandon Valley the other night along with a couple of big tackles on defense. Don't know if he is a sophmore or junior but definately a track standout and looks like one good football player. Believe that he lives with sister and brother in law (maybe other way around). Both have ties to USD - but if he is that good - SDSU can offer full ride with extra scholarships where USD has no chance of offering the same. Hopefully this is the kind of recruit that will be looking at the only D1 university in SD.

Don't know how good he is, but i know he has serious connections to the U. Mike would probably be able to tell us more because i believe it was on his show last spring that they were talking about christie and maybe even Lucky Huber(USD track coach) was commenting on him.

Quincy apparently has been talking about LSU, to run track...

Christy's (step-dad, brother-in-law?, not sure) is Scott Munsen, former coach at USD and former Augie standout. That is the extent of my knowledge on him. Sorry.

Ouch, the funding comment really hurt. We need to find a way to counter that for recruiting; guarantee other kids will see that.

Yeah, there will be some of that. You have to remember, Yankton is right in the middle of Coyote Country. He has probably heard negative stuff about SDSU for years. The reason I write that is because of his comment "They're not in Division I to say they're in Division I, they want to get better." It's obviously directed at SDSU.

                    Re: 2005 Recruits

The funding issue was a thing even when I was being recruited. NDSU football had more funding when we were in DII and will probably continue to have more as we delve into DI. I have some good friends who chose NDSU over SDSU and obviously have many more friends that went the other way. Never did I hear funding as a deciding factor. For this kid it may have been, but it was never a factor with anyone I know. That includes Zach Carter who was all but packed to go to Nebraska before they started jerking him around a couple days prior to the signing date. After telling Nebraska to get bent, he chose SDSU over NDSU and UND based on his feelings towards the coaching staff, not funding. He just liked Coach Balke (old D-Line coach) and wanted to play for him. Coach Stig was probably 99% of the reason I decided on SDSU for the same reason. I'm babbling, but the point is, most athletes see past funding and know the real things they want out of a school is an ability to win and to play for good coaches. I'd have to agree with Alumguy that this Yankton kid was probably inundated with anti-State feelings. Hell, last year's U-State football game was broadcast on TV with the Yankton coach as the color guy and it was all he could do to stop himself from outright rooting for USD to win. If that's his coach, I doubt he had much to say positive about State.

On an aside, I hate using the "when I played" analogies. But, I felt it was warranted here.

                        Milwaukee,
No problems for me when you reference how it happened for you. Since I never went thru that, your opinion carries much more weight than mine. I forgot about the Yankton coach and the broadcast, so you guys are probably right in that respect.

                          Re: 2005 Recruits

Here's some info on Quincy Christy of Pierre.

Quincy's sister is married to Scott Munson. She's from Jamaica and had been a sprinter at USD. She's a nice gal.

Scott had been a standout runner for Mitchell High School...he's the son of the basketball coach, Gary; but, if you met Scott, you'd not make the connection. Totally different personalities etc.

Scott is a great guy. He was a standout runner for Augustana. Perhaps the main reason many people do not recall Scott as a high school or college runner was because Huron High School, and then SDSU had ROD DEHAVEN...same age as Scott. Need I say more? Nobody around here beat Rod.

Scott was a highly successful distance coach at USD so he was in charge of the X-country teams and distance runners on the track team (SDSU grad Dave Gottsleben is the overall head coach and coordinator for the USD track program). Scott was very popular and is given a lot of credit for developing fair-to-middlin' runners into national contenders (one example: Parkston's Andrew Neugebauer, an 800-meter specialist...1:59 in high school, now 1:47 to 1:48 and improving...runs for Nike out of L.A.).

Scott left USD three years ago and went to Morningside to coach and he finished a divinity degree at the same time. He then went to Pierre a couple of years ago and he's a minister.

Quincy is a nice kid...I've been introduced to him and have watched him run for a few years...his initial acceleration is impressive. On the football field, he's one of those runners who, when he sees a hole in the line, he'll get through it faster than most and once he does, you won't catch him. His first 30 meters are lightning fast. I think this Spring you'll see him run some very fast 100 meter dashes in track because he's maturing over where he was the past couple of seasons.

I think we have a great prospect in Jaron Harris (rs freshman)...Jaron Harris is as fast, some say faster, than Quincy at 100 meters...I think he can beat Quincy at 200 meters most of the time. I suspect Jaron may be more of a power runner compared to Christy ...you know the type: once he's under full steam, watch out. I think Jaron is harder to pull down. Jaron missed much of his senior year in track due to a pulled hamstring but when he came back at the end of the season, he matched up well with Christy (who was only a soph at the time).

Arlin Likness was my coach at Hamlin High School. Lead us to 3 straight 11B football championships and is a good coach. Not sure regarding his opinions of SDSU but a lot of kids who played for him at Hamlin played at SDSU. Jeff Thue, Kevin Tetzalaff, Dave Lieseth, Mark Stevenson, just to name a few. I didn't see the State-U broadcast but I heard he made a fool of himself. I suspect its more of a geography thing with Yankton's close proximity to Vermillion.

NDSU is a great school with a rich FB tradition. Great school part applies to SDSU, the FB tradition part is getting stronger each year starting now.

I hate to be the guy that starts bashing a recruit just because he chose another school over us because I think it sounds bitter. BUT, I got this info a few weeks ago and now it appears time to share it.

I noticed the Ebel kid on our sideline during the NDSU game. After the game I was talking to one of our players from Yankton and I asked him what he knew about him, and his comment was that there was a strong question about his heart/attitude.

I hope he gets what he wants up there. Coach Meadows once told me that if a player wants facilities they pat him on the back and bid him good luck. They want the guys who are interested in when they get to play football not where.
