  • SUU will be young

It seems everyone is picking Southern Utah last in the Great West and for good reason, the Thunderbirds are going to be very young this coming season. Here are highlights from a Salt Lake Trib story:

Southern Utah: This year, athletes providing new faces

Getting to know you: Most of last season's starters are gone, but coaches are optimistic

    The Salt Lake Tribune

CEDAR CITY - Last year, most of the new faces belonged to the coaches when Southern Utah University opened fall football camp. This year, the bulk of the players are new.
When camp begins at 3:15 p.m. today, only 10 starters will return - six on defense and four on offense. Of the 90 players on the roster, only 27 are returning lettermen. The Thunderbirds lost 22 seniors, and several other players who left on LDS Church missions.
"We definitely lost a lot of talent, but we feel really good about the players we were able to recruit and bring in to replace the guys we lost," said coach Wes Meier, beginning his second year. "It's going to be fun to get out there and see what we've got to work with this year." . . .

Southern Utah opens the season Sept. 1 at Idaho State and begins Great West Football Conference play on Oct. 15 at UC Davis. It's first three games are on the road, with its home opener Sept. 24 against Stephen F. Austin.

"We've worked hard to bring in quality kids who we think will step in and contribute immediately," Meier said. . . .

The Thunderbirds make the trip to Brookings on Nov. 5th.

    Go State! ;D
