NDSU does better with the media, it looks like SDSU does too. It looks like a good guess going into the season. I liked CKs pick better, and I think it has a chance. Its a long season.

Northern Colorado gets a first place vote? Why didn't they just give everyone a first place vote to make them feel better. That vote by itself should show how much credibility those polls have before a game has even been played.

Jacks 4th in league media poll

        BY ERIC X. VICCARO

Need proof of how competitive the Great West Football Conference was during its inaugural season?
Here it is. Eleven of 15 Great West games were decided by 10 points or less during the 2004 campaign.
South Dakota State University coach John Stiegelmeier expects the same for the season ahead.
"It can be more competitive," Stiegelmeier said of the season ahead. "We had two losses that were decided by one play last season. The fans are going to be able to see some great football."
The Jackrabbits' initial conference game is a doozy when Cal Poly visits on Sept. 24.
Cal Polytechnic State was rated the No. 1 school in the Great West by the media and coaches alike. Cal Poly scored 189 points in the media poll, 23 more points than North Dakota State. The school earned 20 first-place votes out of 35 ballots cast from the media.
"They are number one for two reasons," Stiegelmeier said. "They are a top 10-12 team in Division I-AA, and it was a shame they didn't even make the playoffs last year. They are also the most established school in the conference in terms of scholarships. They are further down the road than the rest of us."
Cal Poly won the inaugural 2004 Great West title with a 4-1 league record. The Jackrabbits lost to Poly 14-7 at San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Oct. 2, 2004.
SDSU was rated fourth in the media poll, compiling 88 points, one more than Northern Colorado.
Cal Poly was given strong praise in the coaches poll, racking up 32 points and three of six first-place votes. California-Davis was second with 28 points, one more than NDSU.
The Jackrabbits were fifth in the coaches' poll with 14 points, four more than cellar-dwelling Southern Utah.
Stiegelmeier said he was going to talk about the media and coaches' polls at a team meeting Monday night, and he wanted to give the players a proper perspective on how to scrutinize the early returns.
"I think it should serve as motivation for the players," said Stiegelmeier, who has served as Jackrabbit head coach for the past eight seasons. "We are ranked in the lower half of both polls, and that should bother us and motivate us to make a statement."
Stiegelmeier also said the polls might be indicative of the fact SDSU overachieved last season, and the Jackrabbits might have to prove their worth all over again. . . .

Its favorable schedule could help SDSU finish higher than what most people expect.
In addition to the home date with Cal Poly, the team plays host to UC-Davis at Howard Wood Stadium in Sioux Falls on Oct. 8, Southern Utah (Nov. 5) and Northern Colorado on Nov. 19 in the regular-season finale. The Jackrabbits play at NDSU in the Fargodome on Nov. 12.
SDSU was a perfect 4-0 at home during 2004.
Overall, the Jackrabbits have eight home games and only three away.
They play the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (Sept. 3), Valparaiso (Sept. 10), Missouri-Rolla (Oct. 22, Hobo Day) and Georgia Southern (Oct. 29) here. SDSU plays at Division I-AA powerhouse Montana on Sept. 17 and Texas State on Oct. 1 to round out the strong slate.

This brings to light the biggest drawback of having so many home games. After we have a great season, there will be a lot of people out there that will say that it was because of all the home games.
